So, I got to ask, is the play a drama or a comedy?

The poem it is based off of? Or the actual play? The poem is nowhere near a comedy, total drama, and the play is most likely going to be a drama, too, but you never know

What's the time frame? If it's modern you gotta put in some pop culture icons that might be linked to some sins, sorta depends on your moral position.

JFK, Oswald, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Ghandi, Kurt Cobain, Churchill, John Wilks Boothe, Steve Erwin, Anna Nicole Smith, Tupac/Bigge, Malcom X

The above do not reflect my beliefs but I think might work better than more obscure historical figures, even if their evil is more severe. Dante wrote about a lot of contemporaries.

I just need recognizable people, like a person who would be rcognized by their name or by just seeing them, IE. Cleopatra and Hitler

T'would be a hard thing to do. You want an inspiration in play, don't go for Inferno. Inferno had novelty going for it, but if you want a format or setting to borrow, try Our Town by Thornton Wilder. It would be easier to represent the modern day by putting all the modern day characters in the same community, and focusing on their interactions. If you still want the novelty value of something unique, then Act III of Our Town may interest you a lot; it's essentially the arrival of the latest death in the town, the lead female act, her interaction with the people who had died before her (her mother, the town drunk who committed suicide, etc) and highlights what's important in life and what isn't. Easier to pull than something based off of Dante's Inferno.
