Infinity Blade Strikes Again

The adventures of Infinity Blade's nameless hero will continue in a full-fledged sequel.

Generation after generation [http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/01/10] of brave heroes made the ultimate sacrifice to quell the terrible power of the Infinity Blade. Now, Chair Entertainment wants to send a whole new lineage of warriors to the abattoir. During a press conference to discuss Apple's new iPhone 4S, representatives demonstrated Infinity Blade 2, revealing the new iOS-exclusive sequel. So far, the game looks like it will continue the hack-and-slash adventures of its predecessor while adding new bosses, locales, and role-playing elements.

Infinity Blade 2 helped to show off the iPhone 4S's capabilities, but it will not be exclusive to the dual-core cell phone. Any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch will be able to run the game. Epic Games, Infinity Blade's publisher, found the original's sales figures to be encouraging [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110768-Infinity-Blade-Sales-Surpass-10-Million], and will be evaluating further opportunities for the Unreal Engine 3 in the mobile market. The world of Infinity Blade will be expanding too, with an eBook novella from bestselling fantasy author Brandon Sanderson.

Infinity Blade has been one of the strongest arguments for hardcore gaming on mobile platforms so far, and it looks like the sequel will aim to continue that trend. As long as the game doesn't fall to the immortal God King during development, it will hit the App Store on December 1, 2011.

This is really not good news. Infinity Blade was not a good game. It was barely even a game. It was tantamount to a series of quicktime events and some limited navigation.

I honestly can't think how the sequel might be better unless they make an entirely new game. Infinity Blade was dull, repetitive and ultimately lacking in gameplay.

A shiny coat of paint don't make a new car.

I'd not be surprised if they pull the same shit of giving you like 6 monsters to fight...

Over, and over, and over, and over, and over[footnote]For as long as you feel necessary to get your money's worth out of the game, because it was ridiculously repetitive.[/footnote] AGAIN

And yet no android release... I know why, but it's still annoying.
They're a console-focused developer now, obviously they'll opt for the tightly-controlled iOS market.

Ad infinitum? Well, the game has a fitting title, then.

Infinity blade took the idea of one strong gameplay mechanic fine-tuned to perfection and ran with it. Personally, I spent hours on it.
Infinity blade seems to have more in common with arcade games than the hack-n-slash games we're used to. You have what basically amounts to a short round of combat (wave of space invaders, level of pac-man) that progressively gets more difficult and forces you to hone your reflexes as you get further. It then pretties up the concept with fantastic visuals, tosses in visual diversity and a few different classes of combat, puts in some upgrading stuff so you feel that your own character is progressing as well as you are, then after making sure the gameplay is tight and gets devilishly hard (without being impossible) they throw in multiplayer and an arena mode.

Not a good game? I'd hate to be a game-developer with critics like you out there.

I find it amusing that the author who wrote a series with someone remarkably like the God-King is going to write the novella :p

Hey, there were lots of different enemies, each with their own vastly different color scheme. Palette swaps count dammit!

For iOS games, this had a good graphics engine, but still wasn't all that nice to look at. It was very "current-gen", and not in a good way.
