I watch a lot of TV, movies, etc.. I've noticed a trend when it comes to how we rate inappropriate content and frankly it's disturbing. This is predominantly a problem in the States, although I'm Canadian so their media effects ours the majority of the time. A show or movie can have hour upon hour, scene upon scene of death, killing, violence and torture and it might get 14a rating. The only way an action movie will get an 18a rating is if, 1) There is an exceptional amount of gore, or if 2) There is sex.

Our society puts sex, a perfectly normal and enjoyable act we ALL engage in, in a more taboo category then taking a wet rag, shoving it down a man's throat, waiting till it goes down to his stomach and ripping it out. (A la Jack Bauer, for those of you who watched 24). Murdering hundreds of people is glorified, and "cool" and is granted a lower rating than a married couple, in love, expressing that love to each other.

The MPAA (The guys that slap ratings onto shows and movies) exist so that young people aren't exposed to material that may be damaging to them. How is sex more damaging than murder? It's complete backwards logic. And let's be clear, we aren't talking about porn here. We're talking a sex scene in which two adults are making love and not much is actually shown, maybe a breast? Maybe a bare backside?

It's like 2 hours of unjustified murder, chaos, violence and death is just peachy, but god forbid the youngsters see a boob for 3 seconds. What do they think will happen? They leave the theater a drooling savage in the throngs of animal lust? I think the natural progression of puberty will take care of that on it's own. Mother nature doesn't need our help making kids think about, want, and explore sexuality. No, we must KILL IT WITH FIRE! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!

What's wrong with sex, even if that effect did take place? I just don't understand our society, Escapists.

The TV rating system has been outdated for some time now. If you look what TV and movies use to be able to get away with and still fly under the radar compared to now; it's like night and day. We've needed to overhaul our rating system for a while, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

Well, Love actually, which has tits and a porn-recording (simulated sex) and everything has an age rating of 7+

Edit: Looks like the internet tells me it's rated 11. I could swear I've seen 7+ on the back of the cover once though.

What do you expect?Religions have been telling us for thousands of years that sex,an act as natural as eating, sleeping and shitting,is somehow wrong and immoral.Unless it's between a married man and woman that is.And even then it's only for procreational purposes and isn't something to be enjoyed. And if you enjoy it there's something wrong with you.And the sexual zones on our bodies well they're dirty and if you touch them yourself you're a sinner..etc etc

Is it any wonder that our views on sex are so screwed up?

Are you seriously just catching on to this now? It's been this way for quite a while, and yeah it's ridiculous. It's just one of those things that's a problem with society that's easily dealt with by ignoring it. Despite ratings anyone can watch whether they want, and they certainly do.

If you haven't already, everyone should see "This Film is Not Yet Rated". It's on Netflix.

If by 'religions' you mean 'specific subset of Christianity', and even then you're wrong on a few counts.

Aren't there some other countries that are the exact opposite? They'll allow tons of sexual content but next to no violence? I stand ready to withdraw my statement if I'm wrong, but I remember hearing that somewhere.

Nope by religions I mean all three of the Abrahamic faiths seeing as they all prohibit sex outside marriage, all three consider masturbation to be wrong and all 3 consider homosexuality to be wrong

Well, murder is a horrible awful thing...but sex is a beautiful thing that really everyone wants to do anyway. So yea, I never understood why the violence is worse than the sex.

Violence is way worse than sex, that should just be common sense by now.

Because, pretending it doesn't exist is the best way to prepare kids to one day accept sex in a healthy manner.

Right? Right?

Uh guys, lets take off our outrage hats for a second and think logically about this:

Q: What are age ratings for?

A: Protecting children from content which is inappropriate for their age.

Q: Is sex appropriate for young children to watch?

A: No

Q: So should sex scenes be restricted to those who have the maturity to see them?

A: Absolutely

It's not about sex and violence being "worse" than one another, its about what is appropriate for young un's to see. Note the difference between sex and nudity, in the UK at-least non-sexual nudity can even get a U rating.

Such a well done movie, I'm glad other people have seen it.

OP: Sex and violence are by no means the only area where there are huge contradictions. Part of it, in the US anyways, is the MPAA is "ratings" board and "not" a censorship board. Which means that it doesn't ban something from being in films, it just increases its rating in a subjective and corrupt way.

Other large disconnects are the "severity" of curses, homosexual sex vs. heterosexual sex, sexual positions, oral sex on men vs. on women, amount of violence vs. realistic depictions of violence and many others.

I love Foamy hahaha.

OT: I think a lot of it has to do with how taboo sex has been over here. Sex used to be something that wasn't displayed for the public to see. And religion put a stigma on it to be only shared between a man and his wife. The rating system hasn't modernized itself. I was shocked when nudity found it's way into video game releases, and not some mod that had to be installed by the community.

Given time I think they will change the way the rating system works, because it isn't working anymore, sex has invaded every part of our culture, and in the manner that it has it is having a negative impact on us.

There's severe lethal and legal consequences to violence. Almost 99.99999% of the people exposed to it through the media know it's a bad idea to participate and recreate such violence. The MPAA probably know this. Same can not be said for sexual activities. It's much more appealing, accessible, and lulls you into a potentially life ruining situation if you're not ready for it.

You may think it's harmless for a 13 year old girl to be exposed to sexual material, then sneaking behind her parents backs to pass out some nookie, then getting preggerz because she was too immature to know about the consequences, THEN going through a traumatic life threatening child delivery because her body wasn't mature enough, then going through her family's ridicule, then not having enough money to support the child and putting strain upon her family, then having the baby's daddy leaving her because he was young and ill prepared as well, then him having to pay for child support forever,,,,,,, yeah, it's a mess, and it happens too often already.

Least when I was 13, I took my violent mass murders upon anthills via magnifying glass.
