If you've been playing games anywhere from 1995 through the present, you'll undoubtedly have played an FPS or two (and if you haven't yet, I can't imagine any reason why). Back in the day, simple corridor shooters and "find-the-key" puzzles were really all devs needed to make an engaging experience. Throughout the years, several innovations came around: Half-Life introduced in-game cutscenes (as far as I'm aware), Deus Ex showed a new level of depth in the genre, Perfect Dark showed that console-based multiplayer could be flawlessly executed, and so on.
In today's world, many things that once seemed astounding and new have gotten stale and old. When was the last time you gave a genuine "Holy shit!" when playing an FPS of today? With such games as Doom 3, Haze, Halo 3, and about a thousand James Bond 007 titles clogging the used-games market, it may seem like FPS designers have run out of ideas.
Here's where you come in.
Undoubtedly you've been playing an FPS and thought to yourself "Wouldn't it be cool if?" or "That should have happened like this:". This thread is to present your ideas for future FPS games, and talk about each others' ideas to flesh out their usefulness.
I'll start off with a few:
-Everything in the game should remain in first-person view. I'm talking Condemned's level of devotion to remaining this way. I want every door opened to be animated (as in FarCry 2) and I want every action expressed by your character during cutscenes to be apparent by the way the camera sways and their body language.
-Your player character should be an "average Joe". I mean, someone that has been drafted into the military (or other fighting cause) and knows nothing of combat. When you pick up an exotic weapon, your character will have to disassemble it when you come to a safe spot (all in first-person view) and figure out exactly how the thing works. From then on, your effectiveness with each weapon will depend on how much time you've spent using it, and efficiency will increase without the need for tacky progress bars or XP quotas.
-When an explosive goes off near your player and gibs an enemy or corpse, blood and debris should hit him/her in the face and force them to visibly stumbled and rub it out of their eyes with a sleeve.
