It's currently 2 in the morning, I can't sleep.

So what game should I play that will either bore me to sleep or still be playable in a state of half death until the morning?

Well, if you're trying to honestly sleep, gaming is one of the worst things you can do, but whatever.
Normally Dragon Age or something long-winded that involves a lot of focus for the boring option. Everything seems so complicated that you'll just think "Fuck this" and go to sleep.
While finding a game you haven't played in a while and genuinely enjoy, getting stuck into it will probably be the best way for the second option. Or hell, Minecraft.

I'm not really trying to sleep, but I'm also not trying to stay awake.

The problem with playing a game like Dragon Age is that I will inevitably fuck up my save file. Last time I did an all nighter on a BioWare game, two people died in Mass Effect 2.

I kind of get what you mean. But just saying, if you're trying to sleep by gaming, not the best idea, overstimulates the brain and if you get into a particularly good one, you're stuck there until the same time the next day.

Anyway, I'd recommend starting from the very beginning, possibly playing a origin you haven't done before and just trying to get as far as possible. That's worked with me before.

Last game I remember doing this with is Grand Theft Auto 4. And that was only because I wanted to try out all the online game types. I really don't tend to do Insomnia Gaming for some reason, even though I'm an avid gamer and I have a hard time falling asleep

Play Oblivion, that game is so boring it will get you to fall asleep within minutes.

I find Minecraft quite soothing. The soft, rythmic scraping of pick against stone, the gentle ambient music, the sense of solitude and OH SHIT A CREEPER!

Okay, mostly soothing.

I finished Prototype at 7am after an all nighter not long ago. Not exactly restful admittedly.

Demon's Souls.

I guarantee that game will kick your arse fast enough that sleep will seem like a much attractive proposition.

Especially if you die before completing even a single level. Or a Black Phantom invades. Or You die twice in a row and lose all your souls from the original bloodstain.

Damn you, Shrine of Storms 4-2...

Watch a film instead. Something that doesn't require too much attention. Anchorman, or Hot Fuzz, or something. Much easier for lulling to sleep.

Also, it's 2AM. That barely qualifies as insomnia at all. Get back to me at 4. I'll probably still be here...

How about Red Faction: Guerrilla? It's got an easy to follow storyline, and you can take down any building in the game with nothing but a regular ol' sledgehammer if you want to. If it doesn't keep you awake, then it should at least keep you entertained until you're ready to sleep.
