Today, the worlds oldest man, Henry Allingham died ages 113. He saw 3 centuries, was one of the founders of the Royal Air Force, saw some of the worst sights of the Great War and campaigned for the recognition of war veterans everywhere, as well as being a Great-great-great-grandfather.

Just reading about him today, I think he is (was?) one of the most inspirational people around.

So I ask, who do you find inspires you and why? Can be figures from past or present, real or fictional, but they must have qualities that you find inspiring :D

I read about Henry Allingham. It's very sad.

Anyway, for who inspires me, I'd have to say Guybrush Threepwood.
Incredibly silly, I know, but through the first 3 Monkey Island games he taught me to keep trying at everything as you'll get there in the end.

I've have been known to inspire myself, and unfortunately others.
That sounds like something Oscar Wilde would say :p

For that, you get a happy face wearing a bowler hat. c|:)

"Henry Allingham, the world's oldest man and oldest World War I veteran, who put his longevity down to "cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women", died Saturday at the age of 113."

Talk about beating the odds. Not only did he overcome being in WWI, lung complications from smokes, liver problems from drinking, and numerous STIs from 'wild wild women', but he managed to do it long enough to live to be 113!

Exactly! Just that makes him a legend, then if you add all the things he did in the war, you've got yourself a top drawer hero :D

Probably, HAYAO MIYAZAKI. In a world where conventional animation is all but dead, he still does his own thing and kicks ass at it. As a cartoonist myself, watching any of his movies fills my heart with desire to match it.......(which ofcourse I could never achieve).

JK Rowling. Mum living on the dole, now she's the second richest woman all because of her imagination. I love her.

Carl Sagan...

The universal message of "USE your brain, don't be an ass and enjoy your stay in this wondrous world" is awesome.

Everybody should at least watch "Cosmos" and read "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space"... hell get the audio book and let him read it to you. Another great man died much too soon.

He saw 3 centuries,
Um, a little wrong there, He saw 1 Century. He saw 11 Decades however. BBC is wrong.
He saw one full century. He lived in 3 different centuries (Just).

Wow, that was really quite amazing. There's nothing else I can really add. If only everyone realised how true that is...

The music by Vangelis in the background made it even more inspiring I think :D

Born in 1896 (19th century), lived all through the 20th century, and saw the beginning of the 21st century. That makes 3 by my count.

I didn't say that he had lived 3 centuries, only that he had been alive in 3 centuries.
