I hate when people abbreviate Battlefield 3 as BF3. It just makes me want Battlefront III. Forever holding out for it.
Actually, it isn't. I just tested it. I purchased Mirror's Edge through Origin, so it requires it for DRM purposes, but that's it. I could launch Mirror's Edge directly from the Start menu without Origin launching. I even added Mirror's Edge to my Steam library and launched it from Steam, checked task manager and no Origin process was running. So as far as I can tell, it was only necessary to use Origin to download, install and activate the game. Given how people were complaining about the CD-key check and SecuROM, it ends up being a pretty reasonable DRM system, in that once the game is registered to your account, you can easily run it from multiple systems you own.Worgen said:its still another thing to start up and stop when I want to play, not to mention that doing a digital thing like this is hard, people dont seem to think it is, but it is, microsoft still hasnt got it right and games for windows has been out for years, steam started out pretty sucky also before they worked it out and they still have some trouble with big launches on it, origin is a brand new one of these and bf3 is shaping up to be a huge release so what are the odds it will even work when the game is released
wait, so it has to be installed but you dont have to have it up and running like steam?lockecole21 said:Worgen said:Cowabungaa said:Ask yourself this:Worgen said:its not the size, its who runs it and having another one to have to have running in the back ground
How much is this really affecting the gameplay and my enjoyment of the game?
The answer is, clearly; very very little. You can just turn Origin off when you stop playing and not have it auto-launch when you boot your PC. Honestly, when you just ignore it, I expect that you'll barely notice it's there.
So yes, because of that I'll still get it. I won't actively endorse Origin, I probably won't actively use it and I don't like it either, but in the end I doubt that it's going to negatively affect my experience all that much.

even though i despise EA origin does not need to be running in order to play your games that is the one and only reason i like it,still like you i don't want all of those additional programs clogging up my pc.
well at least it doesnt need to be running, I still dont like it but thats better then I thought it would be, at least ea doesnt have much coming out that Im really looking forward to besides bf3migo said:Actually, it isn't. EA's certainly not doing the best job of communicating how Origin works, and they probably want people to think Origin has to be running so they get used to it and start using the features, just as people started getting used to Steam features, but the FUD has really got to stop.
For comparison, I can't even find an EXE to launch L4D that I have installed with Steam. So maybe, just maybe, people need to realise that the negative feelings they've got towards Origin really stem from Steam being such an intrusive "service", and that they should really be divesting themselves of Steam rather than sucumbing to Stockholm syndrome and defending it.
still annoying but not as bad as it could have been, Ill keep it on the list for nowlockecole21 said:as far as i know the only time it's needed to be up and running is when your downloading games.Worgen said:wait, so it has to be installed but you dont have to have it up and running like steam?lockecole21 said:Worgen said:Cowabungaa said:Ask yourself this:Worgen said:its not the size, its who runs it and having another one to have to have running in the back ground

actually its sounding like bf3 will have a similar thing, you may not need origin running but it sounds like now it requires you to start the game from a website, sounds like there is no ingame menu system so bf3 probably wont have an executable either and it will just be tied to a web browser to start the gamemigo said:For comparison, I can't even find an EXE to launch L4D that I have installed with Steam.
