Urban legends.
There will be a story in a local newspaper somewhere about, say, someone who comes home from a lenghty shopping trip, finds their dog (usually a Doberman) having trouble breathing, and takes the animal to the vet. It turns out that the dog is choking - on three human fingers! Police are notified, and after a quick search of the neighbourhood, they arrest a man with three missing fingers. Who, it turns out, has been wanted for some time, for a series of burglaries and several murders.
Someone from the newspaper is sent out to do a follow-up, but is unable to locate any of the people involved. There have been no reported burglaries in the area concerned. Nobody with three missing fingers has been arrested. No choking Doberman has been brought in to any local vet.
Some persistant research will reveal nothing - except that the same story appeared some years previously, in a local newspaper in a different part of the country. And that no follow-up was made.
In short, nothing of the sort has ever happened.
This is an urban legend. One of a great many weird, creepy or funny stories that crop up in the news every now and again, despite having been debunked repeatedly.
Where are these stories coming from? If this Doberman incident never happened (and there is no evidence that it ever did), how did it make the news in the first place? Why does it KEEP making the news?
Is someone just making them up? It's been bugging me for years!
