This is not something that should be dived into, messaging friends and begging them to respond to your threads or posting a shock-worthy or misleading title aren't looked upon too kindly here.

Best bet is to really think about what threads you should make, post them at a time when the topic is of high interest and a little Pegghead tip is to post around midday Australian time for good results.

So... what you're saying is... you want to make a topic that gets a lot of replies?

Oh come on. That's easy.

Here, let me get you started:

"What games do you think are overrated?"
"Why does everyone like Fallout 3 so much. I think it is crap."
"The Halo series is much better then the Half Life series."
"Abortion is awesome. Everyone should do it."
"Are gay people unnatural? Should they be purged?"
"Do you take Yahtzee seriously?"
"I think Yahtzee is too critical."
"Yahtzee isn't funny any more."
"Valve make bad games."
"Bioware make bad games."
"Nintendo need to stop making the same game."
"Are most Muslims terrorists?"
"Is Christianity dying?"
"Consoles are better then PCs."
"The Xbox 360 is better then the PS3."
"Kinect and Move are the future of gaming."
"Something about sex."

Any one of those is a guaranteed hit.

Have fun.

Wow. You've just written a list of the threads I'd most like to see banned. They're all terrible, terrible ideas for threads, and as long as they're infesting the forum, I'm embarrassed to be here.
Oh, I completely agree with you. Those threads are all terrible and should die in a fire.

But they're also guaranteed to generate a lot of responses. Which is what the OP asked for.

Instead of trying to draw a larger audience just try and focus on making a thoughtful thread about what interest you. If you really are just in it for the attention, make a fun and interesting thread about a situation or subject matter, where people can post and talk about said subject matter. Thats well planned out before posting(Because I can't stress this enough, look for every loop hole because theres always going to be some party pooper).

A great place to start would be the forum games section.

I've seen so many of these kinds in particular in the last month or so, it's ridiculous. They need to stop, especially the "I don't understand homosexuals" ones. Why do people care?

Edit:

OP: From what I've seen recently, starting a thread asking a trivial question or a thread about Fallout: New Vegas seems to be worthy of many responses.

The internet, as far as I'm concerned, should never be somewhere where sex or sexuality is mentioned.
What? Why not?

I post threads without the goal that it'll garner a huge, vast response. I want discussion or statistics (if it is a poll thread), not total views when it comes to my threads. Quite frankly, the chances of you getting a Topic Inferno badge is as likely as you getting a jackpot in a Casino. It can happen but the odds against it are staggering.

Look at it this way. You may someday make a thread that everyone will remember you for but that won't come about because of a conscious effort to make it. Post about what matters to you, provide some deep meaningful questions. Also always remember that your thread, no matter how fantastic, is pretty much guaranteed to get buried within the month.

I post then forget about it. The Escapist has its own very unique rhythm and I don't think it is worth the time/effort figuring out what will be popular and what will not be. I hope that what I post provokes ideas or a joke from my audience.

Just as an aside, relationship threads need to die in a fire as well, and the people who write them should just leave and figure out the issues on their own. Stop trying to involve the internet in your problems.
Have you heard about the Advice forum that is coming soon? It'll scoop up all those threads and hide them away from us. Off topic will be clean and we can report any that appear any that appear in the wrong forum. This will be great because people who like to help people can go to the specific forum and we won't have to deal with three of these threads on the front page every day.

My most popular thread (8 pages of replies in a single night) was a controversial one, but equally so was my least popular one (0 replies, and less than 10 views...).

Basically, don't worry, a deserving thread will get the attention it deserves.
