I just got a call. It was a call from a number I couldn't see- withheld right? Well, the only place that has a withheld number that knows mine is the Red Cross badgering me about blood donations (incidentally I need to call them back and see if a MRSA infection constitutes unacceptability for donations... Frack).
So I pick up. This is a word by word dictation of the conversation.

phone conversation said:
Me: "uh, hello?"
otherperson: "hey baby remember me?"
Me: "...no. who is this?"
otherperson: "It's sparkle. From the dancing bear?"
Me: "Uh..... I think you've got the wrong number."
Sparkle: "No baby it was you. You tipped me extra well."
Me: "Look. I'm pretty certain you're wrong. I'm under twenty one."
Sparkle: .... -hang up-
Okay... so... I spent the next five minutes laughing.

EDIT: so, have you ever been called by someone who had the wrong number at it went completely wrong? Let's make this a discussion of odd calls.

Heads up, this could be like Punch Drunk Love. Next thing you know she'll be charging things to your credit card and sending crews of guys to come beat you up. Get your crowbar ready. This is funny though.

I chuckled. I've had a similar, but less amusing thing happen to me once. I've been texted out of the blue with the message "Hey, it's Jamie, let's go find some men ;)". I texted back asking who the hell it was, but they never replied.

I love wrong numbers. I pretend to be the person they're looking for, or act as if that person lent me their phone, or i stole it.

High-Larious.

This hasn't happened to me. But I do have some phone related stories.

My friend isn't on a withheld number, and gets phone calls from telemarketers all the time. He's turned it into some sort of game. He has casual conversations with the telemarketers, impersonates them, etc.

However, by far my favourite story is when he just put the telemarketer on hold. He came back 40 minutes later, and the guy was still there.

Also, I once got a call from a girl from school asking if I wanted to go to Adventure World (theme park; real tacky) with her and some of her/our friends. I said no, she asked why, I said I didn't want to, she said that I suck, I replied "Yes. Yes I do Suck.", she said "eww" and hung up.

EDIT: One of my teachers from school gets really creative with the "No phones in class" rule. If your phone rings in class he takes it from you and answers it, pretending to be a robber/boyfriend/policeman etc. Fun times.

A man once rang me on a withheld number and said he has over 300 euro worth of bills charged to my mobile phone...that was awkward to say the least.

Don't let this man ever meet my old high school teachers. It would be hilarious, but too many of those kids are from the ghetto.
"your friend's being held hostage."
"OH WHAT THA-" -hang up-
-twenty minutes later two guys with bandanas over their faces and uzis burst in- Where's mah homie?

I have similar number to a hotel near my house, so if I get bored/annoyed at people continuously calling to make reservations (and they are very rude/annoying on the phone), I just "give" them a reservation, that way nobody's a winner.

Lesson here being, start the conversation off with some small-talk.

In an unrelated phone story I once rang 1-800-HOT-NUNS on a dare, turns out it's The University of Phoenix. Also, they don't have much of a sense of humour about their phone number.

One time when I was about six a friend of mine was called up by some really creepy guy, and asked tonnes of questions like "How was your day?" "Who are your friends at school?" "Are your parents home?" and other such things, then he asked a question involving doll houses or something and my friend said "Uh... I'm a boy." and the guy hung up.

That was really weird, especially from the point of view of a six year old.

Our number is one digit off a dog washing place, so we pretty much get that constantly.

I considered poaching the dog wash's business once, but then I realised I'd actually have to do some work.

On a related unrelated note, I once, on a similar dare, phoned 1-800-BIG-DONG, and it was the "former" number of a local private health clinic. Perhaps they figured it out...

I love it when people phone and offer me insurance and I just ask really banal, stupid questions. My favourite is asking what insurance is, and seeing how few people can answer me properly.

Here's an idea: Tell whoever calls you instead of the dog place that there is some kind of extraordinary sale going on, as in something free (buy one get one, all free for X time, etc). That way they'd run down to the pet wash expecting free stuff, to find out they never even made an appointment with the people at all.

Probably badly worded (2 AM), but undoubtedly interesting.

I had an experience a few years ago that shook me up.
I was walking to my then girlfriends house when I walked past a public phone that was ringing.
So I answered it.

Me: Hello
Guy: Hello. Whats your name then..?
So, I told him my name thinking he was just some lonely guy who phoned numbers at random.
Guy: And how old are you?
Me: 22
Guy: Hmmm, that's a bit younger than I pefer...

I fecking legged it.

Nor do I blame you. I've never figured out how you call pay phones. they usually have a 1-800 but it's for maintainence and not for calling it.

I don't think it's the same in the UK.

True, but still. How does one call a payphone? Or rather.... why?
Other than to hit on people it seems....
