International Sarcasm Symbol

After several incidents in a row where a friend of mine on Facebook got yelled at for being a jerk (when he was really being sarcastic to be funny about a topic or whatever) he mentioned to me that there really needs to be a symbol for sarcasm that people can post on the web.

He linked me to the group on Facebook about it but it hasn't produced any results seeing as this miscommunication happens frequently.

I propose that we on the Escapist, being the witty people we are, create a symbol that can eventually be put onto a keyboard someday...

The internet may not thank us but we would always be able to claim it came from here. What say you?

I'm drawing a blank personally...

Your turn!

[sub]And yes, /sarcasm works but not everyone does it and this still happens. If there was an international symbol, things would run more smoothly imo.[/sub]

It's been done.

Their website claims it's actually free to download the SarcMark now. (though i never have).

No matter what you do to tip people off that it's sarcasm, it will defeat the purpose. Sarcasm is something that can only be effectively conveyed through the tone of voice, so you just have to not use sarcasm on the internet.

I like the idea of putting an exclamation point in front of the sarcasm.

!I really enjoy stabbing myself in the gut.

Not true; people extensively use italics, bold font and capitalisation to dramatic effect when being sarcastic. For example:

"Yeah, because that's clearly the right thing to do."

Smileys such as "=)", ":)" or "8D" are also popular to add on the end of sentences when you want to be sarcastic or patronising.

And thus there is no need for any specific symbol, as you've got BBcode...

I remember <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.249515-Poll-Sarcasm-Irony-Punctuation-Mark>a thread similar to this one before.

Sorry Redlin, I couldn't resist. :p

OT: I'm all for creating something like this. It's not like we've got anything better to do with our time. The preceding may or may not have been sarcasm

Sarcasm is hard to convey on the internet? Really?
I never would have figured that out.

Amazing, innit? I'll guarantee you some people will actually think you're serious, though.

A better option would be to simply just not use sarcasm via text. Tipping people off makes using the sarcasm redundant anyway.

Just as well we're here to explain that for you, or you'd be forever ignorant of these important communication subtleties, hey.

I'd imagine that would throw someone who was dyslexic a bit off.

Personally, if I'm being sarcastic over the interwebs, I usually just throw a quick >.> on the end. Most people who know me seem to get the hint.

And I carry a paper around with that symbol too so that these same people know when I'm being sarcastic in real life. It's a really handy indicator for when I decide to deadpan something.

>.>

First time I've ever seen that one. Not into it though, I think we could make something better.

What you need to do is embrace the mind-f***ery that sarcasm in text creates by actively including the wrod sarcasm in the sentence for additional effect.

e.g "It's not like I'm being sarcastic or anything"

OT: Why make it easier to understand, if someone wants to makes sure they are understood as sarcastic, use the /sarcasm thing, if you want it to be confusing, leave it as it is.

Saying it like that just makes me think "Tsundere" ...

Or, you know, we could all commit to better mastering the English language to more accurately express our intentions. Nothing undermines humor quite like declaring you're trying to be funny.
