This sounds way more like sarcasm. Inflection is so interesting.

Obviously the solution is to have everyone type in the International Phonetic Alphabet.

No matter what you do to tip people off that it's sarcasm, it will defeat the purpose. Sarcasm is something that can only be effectively conveyed through the tone of voice, so you just have to not use sarcasm on the internet.
What you need to do is embrace the mind-f***ery that sarcasm in text creates by actively including the wrod sarcasm in the sentence for additional effect.

e.g "It's not like I'm being sarcastic or anything"
Saying it like that just makes me think "Tsundere" ...
"That's ridiculous ..." *blushes*

[sub]And yes, I did just look up Tsundere[/sub]

After several incidents in a row where a friend of mine on Facebook got yelled at for being a jerk (when he was really being sarcastic to be funny about a topic or whatever) he mentioned to me that there really needs to be a symbol for sarcasm that people can post on the web
Maybe the problem isn't that people on the internet don't understand sarcasm. Maybe the problem is that your friend just isn't that funny and his sense of humor makes him sound like a complete jerk.

I would suggest *less* sarcasm. Not more.

A sarcasm symbol already exists. However, it shares the same position of implementation as many other symbols as well as characters for other languages for the latest implementations into International Standardized Font and Character rendering systems, such as the yet-to-be-finished latest version of Unicode.
That is, unless you can see the backwards question mark at the end of this sentence ؟

I post on a forum where we colour code stuff like that.

Or rather, we say stuff like "Did I have to put that in teal for you, stupid?"

Ahem, *Points to avatar*

OT: I'll just use italics and '...' when I want to convey my sarcasm.
For example; This sounds like a really good idea...

To be honest with you, I'm culturally retarded, deceptively so. I mean, I did drama as a subject for two years, and yet, beyond what we were taught academically, I have no knowledge of theatre. I come to the escapist and yet I'm not a harcore FPSer, RPGer or an anime-watcher. So yeah, I'm deceptively uncultured, and this long-winded explanation is basically my way of saying that I have no idea who that person is, or what anime they come from.

You shouldn't really know who Haruna is or what she's from, actually. She's from a show that's still airing right now, and just started this season. It's a complete parody and it's got zombies, magic, vampires, necromancers, serial killers, and fans.

If you happen to be typing in a medium that has an eye-rolling smiley, that should usually be enough to do the trick. If you're on a forum like this one that has no smileys at all, or in an IRC chat room or something, Unicode offers us this little gem:

ಲ_ಲ

Now, if you happen to be writing in a medium where smileys are generally frowned on, it gets a bit trickier. My ideal solution would be to provide a way to make reverse-oblique type ? text that slants to the left ? and use that the way, say, Gralian's post talked about using bold or italics. Or we could just type the entire sentence or clause in it if there's no emphasis implied.

It wouldn't be too hard to implement; it's more a matter of getting everyone to upgrade their software. Fortunately browsers are the main program that would benefit from this, and they're all free to upgrade... but their upgrade cycles are largely beholden to the W3C's standards group, who love to take forever to adopt new ideas.

Of course! The best way to use sarcasm is to have a symbol that shows it clearly. Because that would definatly help sarcasm to be used in more effective ways.

Eh, I like my sarcasm subtle. If you can't catch it, that's too bad for you. Remember: Don't explain the joke [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitle0t9r68ih].

Of course we're all going to adopt some kind of punctuation mark to denote sarcasm. It's not like we have any other methods to convey emphasis and expression through text.

Or, you know, there's also plain old inference. I'm very sure you're all perceptive and intelligent enough that you can tell without the need to be spoonfed. Excuse me while I cry to myself.

I've used several ways to denote sarcasm. Usually I'll say something really stupid in all caps, or just end a sentence with a colon-P

Boy, great discussion we have going on here :p

I THINK WE NEED TO HAVE MORE DISCUSSIONS.

(I'm being sarcastic for the sake of sarcasm. I'm not dissing this thread)

Sarcasm is hard to convey on the internet? Really?
I never would have figured that out.

Amazing, innit? I'll guarantee you some people will actually think you're serious, though.
I totally bought it. Seriously.

I'm a particular fan of another method of establishing sarcasm.

I mean, really, surely anyone who doesn't get sarcasm on the internet is some sort of moron(!).

While I'm all up for the idea of a well known Sarcasm symbol...
I can't help but think--if they don't understand it's sarcasm, they don't deserve to know. I mean its actually pretty easy to tell if someone is using sarcasm on the internet, they usually put things in italics or use a face.

So if people still can tell I'm using it, too bad they're too dumb.

Which is why I like the idea of sarcasm in italics or underlined.
