So for a while now, my internet has been dropping out for about 1-2 mins, every 1-4 hours. This has become very tedious and irritating and I now decide to act against it. I was wondering what might be the cause of it dropping out; whether that be over heating or bad area connection or the router itself and if I can fix it manually or whether a new router is in order.

The router is a 'Netgear 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router DG834GSP v3'

Thank you for your help in advance.

I have sadly had this problem with every single wireless router I have ever had, when i've been with various different ISP's, and in two different locations, both of which are good places for internet with decent connectivity and high speeds. So i've come to the conclusion that wireless is simply shit.

Whenever i've had a PC next to the router plugged into it, or been able to take my laptop downstairs and plug it in, it works flawlessly with no cutting off.

Wires are so misunderstood. ):

It could be a whole variety of things causing it, you just need to eliminate variables. The first step is to update your network card's drivers, as well as updating the firmware on your router/modem. You should be able to check the line quality if your modem has an easy way of being accessed. If not, your ISP can check it for you.

Also, how are you connected to the router? Wired or wireless?
