so the internet has been around for a good wee while now and still remains largely unregulated and i was thinking to myself, is there a level of acceptable behaviour that most of us expect or do things like internet forums and online multiplayers remain a free for all for the worst kind of language and trolling possible?, only abated by admins with a keep eye or an inbox full of complaints. I'm not saying we should all be nicey nicey but there is a point to which oversteps just being objective to someone else's point of view/style of play/behavoiur.

so as an online community do we have standards? or even have an idea of what that standard might be? and what might be that point to which we think oversteps a limit?

I think so. The most obvious being if you disagree with someone, remain civil. Don't start TYPING LIKE THIS TO GET ATTENTION AND SEEM SCARY, and take their side into consideration and respect their beliefs...as if it was a debate 'in real life'.

Also phonetic typing annoys me.

I'm sorry OP, I can't comment on this thread. I'm too busy thinking of my next great your mom joke and planning out new ways to teabag in halo. I like the 360 spin teabag for fucks sake.

No. The admins are just holding back the chaos that will inevitably spill over and destory us all in a firey death of rickrolls and tolling.

Actually, online multiplayer games, it is sometimes acceptable to be a dick, seeing as most players themselves, are dicks. Had one guy call me a fag because I have an English accent (you know, most likely due to being English) so I took the liberty to wittily and pragmatically insult the young bastard (who's balls hadn't dropped), leaving him confused and bedazzled. It's fun to be smarter than hicks.

Web etiquette is completely different from IRL etiquette. Yes, there is. Shit that flies on the internet won't fly IRL, but there's some points that go just way too far. Build a reputation anywhere and you'll understand.

That said, there's some shit that'll fly IRL that doesn't fly on-line. Sarcasm being one of them, particularly in text only mediums.

No.

I like to think the "don't be a fuckhead" rule applies to everywhere.. But alas, the Internet has proved me wrong more than a few times.
