Although I guess this applies to 'debating' in all cases. Why do some people, regardless of how they are doing it, get aroused very excited about arguing with others? Sometimes over topics they don't even care too much about? I have a friend who's like this both online and offline.

I'm mostly indifferent although I'll point and shout at the guy who says rape isn't as bad as normal assault. I just don't get the appeal of it.

Your thoughts on this? Or your thoughts on why you yourself enjoy it?

Oh, I dont know. I guess some people just like arguing. Maybe for some of them, arguing gives them purpose. I suppose people like arguing on the internet because, no matter what they say, there will be no consequence other than some anonymous guy calling them an idiot.

As for me, I usually don't participate in internet fights. It's so much more fun to sit back and watch the chaos ;)

I find it bothersome if I get into a quote argument on here but feel the compulsion to win.

I'm pretty passive, actually. I might get in the odd quibble, but it's rare. I hate internet arguments. I've been trying to get into the habit of just admitting when my point sucks [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.374974-Game-Overthinker-Fall-of-Duty#14543571] or I'm ill-informed or whatever. Sometimes I'll just concede the argument [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.374019-Risen-2-All-DLC-unlockable-using-console?page=3#14479792] because I just really don't feel like it. It used to not be like this, but I just find it very hard to care anymore.

Though I can be a dick on occasion. I do usually feel bad (and embarrassed) about it soon after, though. (Almost) Everyone deserves to be treated with decency, even in the midst of debate.

I have a friend who tries to provoke others with everything he says on Facebook. Even to people he doesn't know. He just tries to get reactions out of others. It's pretty annoying, so I have to ignore the kid.

OT: I don't really like to participate in them, but I love to read some internet verbal assaults. Nothing beats reading a spoiled relationship convo over facebook.

I get dragged into the odd internet fight every now and then. Its partially my fault because I love playing devil's advocate and going into in-depth tangents of "what if?" But, for me, its all fun and games. The moment the argument turns into a shouting match I lose all interest.

Just recently a few people tried to draw me into a fight on this very forum. Not sure what they were all so angry about. But they wanted to push so I just waited to see how long it would take for each of them to snap. I watched 2 out of 3 of them lose their damn minds and just started snapping at me. And then I lost interest.

I can get into a debate but there's no point in getting angry or excited. After all, its just words and if you are so simple as to let words control your mood...

So you call anyone who disagrees an asshole?

I'm a pretty laid back guy but for whatever reason I feel the urge to correct people or to voice my opinion on a topic.

I try to keep it civil though, sometimes I'll type a couple paragraphs and then look over them and if I come across as too hostile I'll leave the thread altogether. If you can't keep a cool head especially on the internet it helps to just walk away.

I thing I like about internet arguments is that you can make arguments which arouse responses, which you can then think about and possibly learn from. I'm not afraid to be wrong on the internet. What I don't like is when people keep saying the same thing over and over as if that will make the argument better in my head.

It's a fun thing to do, and I do it to people I don't respect. Find out what people's limits are. It's great

There's a difference between arguing and debating. Arguing can get all emotional and passionate, with people winding themselves up over the topic in hand. On the other hand, I enjoy a good educated debate, particularly on topics I have a great deal of interest in. However, I often face the problem that not everyone enjoys this, so I'm careful with taking it too far.
The ones I'd call arguments have been when people try to correct me, or jump on something I've said, and then work themselves up into a tizz about proving themselves right. -.-

Incidentally, one of the regulars on here has the motto 'I can't go to bed, someone's wrong on the internet'. (If anyone remembers quite who, you win an internet)

And my own thoughts:

I like a good debate every now and then, it livens things up.

I've got this thread thing down to science now :)

Arguing is interactive.

It's communicating where you don't really need to know much about the other person (Internet).

You can('t) win!

It's way too easy to argue how Internet arguing is not something to wonder.

I knew a guy like that once, he just loved to argue for no reason.

I don't, I'm really bad at holding up my end of the argument. I just end up going down the insult road. xD

I guess some people find it more like a debate than an actual argument? Some people like debating. I guess....
