Okay so I've looked this up on the internet and not really got any help so I thought I'd ask my fellow Escapists.

Lately my internets being really unreliable, every half an hour or so my browser will stop working. I'll still be connected to the internet, MSN will still work but no matter what browsers I use it just won't work. The only way I can get it to work is to restart my laptop.

I wondered if anyone could help me.

Update: Okay so earlier it looked like my internet was sorted, it worked fine for 3 hours or so. However it's started doing it again now. So, same probably as before.
Any help is muchly appreciated.

You could help us by telling which Browser you are using. If it's internet explorer, install a proper one such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, ..

Have you tried a different browser whilst this problem occurred?

It's usually best to read carefully before replying. ;)

I have had something similar happen. I did a mixture of system restore and leaving it alone for a few days, it sorted itself out somehow.

I can't honestly say what did it though.

I've never really used IE.
I'm using Safari at the moment but I've used Chrome and Firefox recently and it's not solved the problem at all.

Do you by any chance use NOD32 as an anti-virus system? This sounds as if anything coming from the 8080 port seems to get blocked. NOD32 has the ability to check sites, but when it's badly configured it might end up blocking everything.

It;s been doing this for weeks maybe even a couple of months now.
In that case why have you not contacted your IP?

Sounds like you're having trouble with DNS resolution. You can test this by trying to access websites via IP address instead of the DNS when you start having problems. For example, to access Google, you would just type http://74.125.127.100/ in the address bar. Causes can range from malware on your computer to firewalls, as mentioned above.

The browser you use is not gonna matter. What are you running on your laptop? XP, Vista, (or Win7)?

I haven't got a clue who my ISP is now, my parents switched last year to this thing where they pay all their bills in one go and the company they did it with sorted everything out. When we were setting the internet up the company were completely useless, they sent us a broken router and promised to send a new one which we still don't have so we're using the router we had with AOL. As far as I'm aware both routers are exactly the same. It's a Netgear DG834G I'm not sure if that helps anyone.

Vista unfortunately.
I've run AVG and not found any viruses etc.

First thing I would try is to reset all the registry entries related to TCP/IP.

Go to start, search for 'cmd'
You'll need to run it as administrator.
Once the console opens up, type 'netsh int ip reset'
Restart your laptop, and see how it does.

Okay so before I go through all the hassle of restarting I wanted to check the results are right.

No, that shows that the command console doesn't have administrator access. I think the keyboard shortcut is ctrl+shift+enter..? (Sorry, don't have a Vista machine handy.) If not, you should be able to right click on the command console icon and instruct it to run as administrator.

And before I forget again, also type 'netsh winsock reset' in addition to the ip reset command above.

I restarted just under an hour ago and it's working fine so far.
Thank you so much for your help.

One last question, if it happens again I assume I can just do that again and it'll sort it out?

i'm going to say this is bs, simply because if msn works, then so does the web because msn uses http to get it's stuff done

tho i could say is it specific sites or all of them?

Occasionally some sites won't work for 10 minutes but then they'll be fine.
Most of the time though nothing will work at all.
However MSN still works but it will only let me talk to one person with messages to everyone else failing to send.
