the reasons behind people lieing to other people are pretty obvious (so lets not bother with that)

the big question is, why are our the lies the same? what's so favourable with being young, american and athletic?

i mean where are the smooth talking british people, or the rough irish, or the down to earth aussies. mainly, where are all the things i havn't thought of?

i dont mean to offend anyone but i dont see the appeal of america. oprah is currently in my country and i feel the boost in tourism is going to lower our national IQ.

am i missing something? where is all the creativity when it comes to lieing to people?
Wow. Didn't you notice the spell-checker screaming in agony just now? I know I did. Use the correct spelling then complain about people's IQ.

Protip: It's spelled like this; Lying.

OT: More people seem to lie about being female. And 18. And skinny. And white. And having big boobs. And being single. And not being a virgin. And horny. And desperate enough to find a guy on the internet and cyber with him.

Note to the internet: THERE IS NOBODY IN EXISTENCE LIKE THAT.
Actually, I feel the need to disagree with you as I know someone who is most of those things (White, single, skinny, big boobs, constantly horny, desperate enough to cyber)... They do exist, but are very difficult to find on the internet.

OT: I'm British and am mostly smooth talking (not quite as good as what you'd see in the movies, I tend to be a bit nervous when talking to people face-to-face... but I can still be smooth when I want to be)

Actually spelt, like spelled, is another correct past participle form of the infinitive "to spell". It also happens to be a wheatgerm.

Just sayin.

I'm a white, 19-year old skinny american. I haven't said otherwise, unless I was joking. When I'm joking I'll say damn near anything.

Anyway, I never truly believe anything I hear or see on the internet. I have my reasons. While some may be telling the truth, there isn't much of a way to trust they're telling the truth. As for me, believe what you want. What I say is true, believe it or don't. I don't mind. So long as we can still get along and laugh I just don't care who/what you are.

Unless your that guy who's in charge of cancelling things on FOX. In which case I hate you.

Regardless if people are lying or not on the internet, it's uncommon for people to care due to the shallow nature commonly evoked on larger website forum communities or public access chats.
Trust is a passive thing if you're inclined to it. For example, I have several friends that I've talked a lot on chats with, and they trust my existence fairly well, even though none of them know exactly what I look like, since I have never posted a picture of myself on the internet.
(Trust between these said individuals was empirically reinforced by the fact that I've sent them presents over the mail, though)

I would say that I am both young and American (not athletic - skinny yes, but not athletic), except by the standards of this forum I am practically a geezer flailing my cane about impotently and screaming at those darned kids who won't stay off my lawn, but still - I've got no reason to lie about those things because they are true. The better question is what is the appeal to foreigners in pretending to be an American online exactly? That... doesn't really make any sense to me.

For an unrelated fact I've been mistaken for an Englishman on couple occasions on the Internet.

I don't lie and I had a hard time making the point of OP's post, especially with the awful generalizations.

Oh, wait. Not another anti-American thread, please.

Ah, confusing threads, gotta love 'em.

To the Op, the effect doesn't really carry over text, but imagine I'm staring at you blankly, cocking my head sideways, then slowly backing away.

The internet was made for lying. On the internet no one knows you're a dog. I consider this my personal fantasy space. I can be whatever I want to be. Today I am a 3 foot 5 gnome, tomorrow a 7 foot tall blue cat person. Yesterday I was a young athletic American male, and the day before an old all-knowing demigod.

None of those things I actually am. In all honestly I am what I first claimed to be on the internet, way back in the Yahoo! chat days. I am 4 foot 7 inch tall gray being from the planet Kruton in the Dalas solar system.

to avoid the anti-american thread I'm gonna talk about what I thought this thread was gonna be about...

I actually lie more in real life than over the internet because I really don't care what people think of me on here being that we all share pretty much same interests. I'm known to over exaggerate to make my non-eventful life sound more exciting but thats really as far as I go with lying

Err........ I dun get dis thread.

The only thing that I lie about online is I say that I am [strike/]an 18 year old Filipino girl[/S] much older than I really am.

In terms of America? I think it's perfectly nice. I have been to many other countries and they all have their faults.

P.S. Why exactly would Opera's current location make you lie to say you lived there?

LOL i'm living in aussie world and Opera's Here YAY but me not care :}

Being an actual young, out of shape American, I don't really have the need to lie about who I am. And I haven't really noticed anybody on here lying and telling us that they're an American. I mean the Canadians generally seem to revel in their Canadianness and the Brits don't mind dropping the fact that they're from the U.K.

Now I might leave out important information about myself at times, but that ain't lying. Its just not telling the whole truth.

I am a smooth talking Englishman, and I've never made any claim to be otherwise! As for young and athletic, I am young but I'd go more for lazy than sporty.

Further, I must disagree with your assumptions. Sure, loads of people are American, but I see the English posting here more than enough.
I don't even know where you got the idea about us all thinking were athletic; if you look at the recent thread regarding people opinions of their own bodies, more than half were complaining that they hated their reflections for being fat.
And as for young; what do you expect? This is the internet, and natural the domain of the younger generations, having both more knowledge and more free time.

I personally feel uncomfortable lying.

So I don't.

And I can understand why others do it, but I don't. :p

I'm young, far too pale, and English. I'm not particularly athletic, though I play badminton to a high standard.

I'd like to consider myself smooth-talking, but that is subjective, and often wasted on people when pulled off.

I am a guitarist, and an arrogant, overzealous one at that - but I have problems performing onstage (not that it stops me).

I'm a gamer (or was untill about 6 weeks ago, I can't seem to find a reason to play any more), and am/was quite embarrassed about it, mostly concealing it from the outside world.

I'm a social chameleon, being all things to all people, ranging from the 'WoW nerds' to the the 'guys that get hammered every friday', but silently judging everyone.

I recently got into anime, and none of my friends know. Nor shall they find out.

I don't value people particularly highly, and often replace people who I grow tired of.

I have strong views as to how the world should be run, and where my will and supervision would improve humanity - but I suppose it's equally likely that's one of the side effects of teenage angst.

I continue to believe, despite my rational mind, that if I wish hard enough, I will wake up one day in a completely different world, in which I possess power of some kind or another.

I'd like to believe that I'm intelligent, and people keep telling me I'm for Oxbridge, so I'd also like to believe that I'm not disillusioned about it.

All in all, I'm not a very traditionally nice person at heart, I've kept a number of my more extreme political (could you call them political, I wonder) views to myself, nor am free from angst and stupidity.

The point I make is this: I actually portray myself very differently to the people I know in real life than this, subconsciously mimicking their mannerisms and though patterns: even if I don't like them - they end up liking me.

My representation of myself is far more dishonest in reality than on the internet.

I dont think many people DO lie about being American
I'm british and it barely matters to anyone if i am or aren't
I don't really understand what angle you're coming from
Who on the escapist actually pretends their anything their not (other than ridiculous things like being a space pirate)
