The idea of piracy on the internet, as in episodes from a TV show being leaked onto the internet and people watching it rather than watching it on their TV's, is nothing new. It's been happening for a long time now and the creators of those shows, as you might expect, are pretty irritated by it most of the time.
However, a thought occurs to me as I look at this issue. Rather than trying to prevent their shows from going online like this, why not just embrace it. I know there have been a few attempts at this before, but I think that in the future it might be a good idea for TV show producers to have their episodes go online intentionally.
If it's advertising that they're worried about then that can easily be fixed. After all, anyone who has watched videos on this site knows that it's fairly commonplace for advertisements to precede or even take place right in the middle of internet videos. So if TV shows were to go online, all they'd need to do is bring their ads with them.
Plus, doing this would get rid of an irksome aspect of television that has been bothering people for many years, that of staggered release dates for different countries. We've all experienced this before. Some new show comes out in the USA or some other country and other nations can't watch it yet because they have to wait for various reasons. But if the show go online then people can view them regardless of the country they're in, depending on that nation's internet laws of course.
Now before anyone asks, I am well aware than not every country speaks the same language, so obviously some countries will get shows once they've finished translating rather than before. But for countries that share the same language, like the UK, USA, Canada (and yes I know they also speak French there) and Australia, to have to wait for a show made with their language doesn't make sense.
So, if you have nay thoughts on this idea, please let me know.
And I apologize in advance if a) this is a threat that people have done before and b) this idea is something that's already happening. If it's the latter then I apologize because I'm not really an expert on this sort of thing.
