"It's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web, searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome, the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be."
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html

I was reading this today and thought to myself, good luck! But then I took a closer look and saw what they intended to do, make an OS that "attempts to rethink what an operating system should be"
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.
Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.
In short, a minimal OS targeted at laptops and the likes for easy, fast and secure internet surfing. So what do you guys think about this new OS idea, is it too bold or would you try it yourself? It's going to be open-source so probably free and with loads of neat programs made from the users. So, give me your thougts about it ^^

There can only be three! Who will go? Windows, Mac or Linux?

Unless the gaming industry starts making their software compatible with Googles OS, I for one will probably just add it as another OS, alongside XP and Ubuntu.

i admit i get a bit giddy when i think of google.

i use Chrome presently-- i love it, and I extol its virtues incessently to the poor disillusioned folks who still live in firefox land--

Even the new IE is better than firefox these days.

Firefox sucks! And if you have a touchscreen capable laptop, chrome wins by such a huge margin.

The concept of getting a computer from cold to web quickly is very exciting... and one of the reasons I dislike vista. Takes this little lappy a long time to get going. When an OS is displayed on the screen, you should be able to click on things and go.. not sit there staring at a little circle waiting for 2000 background processes to start...

Well, the being simple and lightweight sounds like a good idea. Forgive me if I oversimplify things since I'm a (relative) computer noob, but I think the reason Windows has seemingly arbitrary (note the word "seemingly") problems is because of how much is going on at once, thus more stuff in the background to screw things up. This could be a good design choice.

Then again, several versions of Linux probably have that same advantage, so this isn't exactly new.

I hate the google chrome browser cause you can't download jack-shit...and why would you make an OS off of something like this..?

I enjoy firefox, cause it runs things smoothly and I can download the things I need, like the installer for DreamerRO and Adobe Premier...which I couldn't do on Chrome.

Also, I can't tell you how many times Chrome blocked fanfiction.net...

I'm sure this will have all the quality, professionalism, and functionality of everything we expect from an open-source project

That's pretty ballsy, but then again Google is becoming an unstoppable force in the industry day by day. It's smart to start with NetBooks first, then muscle your way into the big time.

Either way, I wouldn't touch it for the first year and a half to 2 years, like every other OS.

That's what I mean, you sound like you're replacing an earlier Google...but Chrome is the first Google browser, and Chrome OS is the first OS Google are making for PC's (Android's phone software, before anyone bitches at me :p).

The only 'old' Google is the search engine, but that's staying. They're doing optimizations behind the scenes, but they always do that.

If anything, it would be like putting your dog (The google site) in an environment designed especially for it (The Google OS). While right now it's in a Weird house that fit's it, but not purposely (Windows).

Your dog isn't changing at all, it's just getting a better home. :p
