Hellow there, I'm Richard and I'm new in this here escapist website.
I've always enjoyed coming here to read the interesting forum topics and (of course )see yahtzee's video reviews so I thought I could create a topic of my own.
About videogames, what can we gain for playing them? Are there more pros or cons?
Do you enjoy playing them with friends or are you a "solo-gamer"? What is your goal on playing videogames?

Cheers webfolks.

Hello, Richard.

We can gain the virtual gratification of hitting old people with virtual cadillacs! :)

Both. RPG's and Surivial Horror are my favourite genres but nothing compares to dispatching my arrogant friends with the wrath of Nightmare of SC4.

Hey, I'm new to this site too.

I like to think that what I get from Video Games is a bit of me time. Some time to relax after a hard day at college, and go let out my frustration, ether through some shooting, or something, the game itself doesn't really matter :)

And I hate it when I have to solo game. I like having my Xbox and being able to talk to my friends while playing, and sometimes we can just muck about now and again.

I don't really have any goals though. Kill more people on-line maybe? Dunno xD

Gaming is a great hobby, and there's definitely some educational value in them, depending on the game you play, but a lot of them teach you about money, resources, math, puzzles, etc. They're definitely not edu-tainment, but it's not like they're rotting our brains.

I like a little of both actually... this is why I love Borderlands. The game works well when played either alone or in co-op. I'm not much of a competitive gamer, but when I do play against other humans I tend to go for endurance matches like Gears of war rather than the twitch shooter.

I read something about people that play fps have better reflexes while strategy players gain more reflexive abilities. Some might even say that our personalities are reflected on the videogames we play along with other tastes we have such as music and movies

Hello,
I mostly play RPGs and T/FPS games, mostly with my brothers, though I do enjoy playing over Xbox Live.
What do I gain? Nothing really, besides something fun to pass the time.

Lots of hand eye coordination. Especially from guitar hero.

BTW, welcome to the Escapist. Please pay no attention to the body under the stairs, and the troll forest to the north east (AKA 4chan)

Hi richard.

Welcome, Ahem. On topic, I somewhat think there aren't many pro's con's to gaming. Although that it is a good time waster.

I usually prefer playing online with close friends and some of my family. Cooperative online games.

I get non passive form of entertainment, in the sense that TV is a very passive form of entertainment. Gaming requires something back from you and I find it keeps my mind busy (If I am watching TV I seldom am just watching I am usually also playing on my PSP or DSi as well)
It is better than fighting through the crowds in a pub/bar and throwing your money away, you get something that will entertain (hopefully for many hours and over and over again)
It might not be conducive to finding a partner if you are single though......

I've read many articles of that kind and it seems that there is indeed a correlation between gaming and improved reaction time and finger dexterity, especially when dealing with console games with controls ranking above average in terms of complexity.

Also, I agree on your point of games being a reflection of one's personality (of sorts); I certainly know it to be true for me: I use games to release pent-up frustration ( --> stuff like God of War or the occasional shooter), to take a short vacation from reality ( --> the less realism in a game, the better), to stay connected to my childhood ( --> superhero games or stuff based on comic books), and I'm also a bit of a dreamer ( --> importance of good story-telling and relatable characters).

And before I forget it: Welcome to the Escapist! :)

I like gaming for the same reason as Jenova65 its a form of entertainment that is actualy interactive. Don't get me wrong I love movies and books but the only way there is any interaction with those mediums is if you have some one to talk with about them. A good game it's you useing your problem solving skills to defeat something, nothing gets me off more than solving a game problem in a way the programmers never meant it to be solved, Im not calling them stupid far from it, in games where I can accomplish such a goal they {the programers} have designed a game so well it takes on a life of its own.
but hey thats just me
