Invert Y-Axis or Not?

Do you generally invert the Y-axis (Layman's Terms: Uppy-Downy Looky controls) in video games? I can't play without it. It's kind of odd though, I used to not invert it, than I tried it in San Andreas one day, and I've never gone back.

EDIT: Per a reply to this post, I've decided to make it a tad more specific. The Y-Axis I'm talking about is for the thumbstick which controls the camera.

It's a matter of perspective. The analogue controller or keypad can be looked at as both forward/back or up/down. If you're in the forward/back mindset, then to look up you need to til your head back, to look down you tilt your head forward. While they've been pretty much forgotten in video games this is even more true for a flight stick, as the flight stick in an aircraft is specifically forward/back, not up/down.

Rather than people posting their own personal preference as the correct way on the matter this is the logical way to look at it.

Depends on what feels right to you. I for one do not like inverted and it confuses the hell outta me, only certain games I can tolerate it, like Starfox.

no, I'm a non-inverter. What I don't get is why don't they invert the x-axis too if it makes sense to move the mouse the opposite way you want to look?

I grew up on flight sims. I always invert the Y. It makes sense to me since it feels like a I am controlling view direcition by grabing the top of the avatar's head and moving it in that direction. Forward tilts down, back tilts up, left and right stay the same.

No, it's weird. I can do the whole inverted thing with flight sims, but with everything else it's just confusing.

I used to be able to use both happily, back in my PS2 days.

Nowadays though I stick to non-inverted... I think its cause in last gen games, a lot of games had inverted controls instead of non-inverted as standard. Nowadays every game has non-inverted, so I can't use them anymore.

I generally use inversion. The only instances where I do not have been MMO's. In spite of the fact that I play 3rd person action with look inversion, I can't seem to do the same with the camera in a game like WoW or LoTRO.

I suspect it started because some of the first computer games I really played were flight simulators. When FPSs came along that supported the mouse, it seemed natural to use an inverted control set.

I prefer to use an uninverted Y-axis.
Ha. Well, I didn't think this post was very original in the first place, just wanted a few opinions.

I didn't think mine was original either. Opinions are the purpose of the forums either way.

I have to invert, otherwise I find myself constantly looking at the ground or up in the air. I don't know what it is, it actually feels more natural to me to have it inverted. It definitely started when I played a flight sim when I was a kid but I haven't gone back to using "normal" since then.

I think inverted feels more natural to me because when I hit up, it's as if my view is being pushed down, it's a movement forward when I hit the right analog. And when I hit down, I'm pulling up. I don't know, it's hard to explain my thought process, but that's how my mind has justified using inverted y-axis in any games not a flight sim.

I only invert it for jet combat.

Everything else is left.

my mind is "trained" to relate up with up, and down with down. Really hard for me to describe, when I invert the Y.. it just feels.. wrong You know?

PC gamer here tho, so it may be different with analog.
