Actually, if gaming has showed us anything it's that we CAN compete. In the 80s and into the 90s, there were a ton of Mario style platformers. Some good, some bad. The shooter is still experiencing a boom, though that may be near an end. Hard to tell, but we're getting less shooter fanfare unless your name includes "Call" and "Duty." Fighting games and RPGs of the 90s? Sandboxes and WRPGs? We have the term "(game name) clone" for a reason.Boudica said:The problem with intellectual property and copyright: competition can't compete to offer the same experience. I'd actually like it a lot of copyright went away and people could out-and-out clone products. The big guys might hate it and throw a tantrum, but people could offer the Mario experience (for example) cheaper, better and more often.
Game A not on the system you own? Someone can port it for you.
Game B too much? Someone will make it and sell it cheaper.
Game C have too many bugs? Someone will make a smoother version.
Okay, full disclosure: I'm an author trying to get published. So maybe I'm a little biased here.Boudica said:You are far, far, far too focused on money. That's one of the problems with this society; we are driven to work ourselves into a shiny grave, to spend three quarters of our life working towards one quarter of living. Worse yet, most people genuinely believe there is no other option, that life simply works that way.
I've news for you, most every major invention ever, was brought about by need, not through greed. From the light bulb to the syringe (both of which were invented by people that never got rich from their creation), we make things because we want them. It's only in the capitalist cesspit that greed and not human spirit drives creation.
Yet you have no points to back up how your dream market would work. Simply saying that "if a product is bad people won't buy it" is a horrible argument. People buy horrible products all the time. The Zune, The Virtual Boy, The N-Gage, anything on the Shop Channel. They all get sold due to marketing, another facet of economics which you don't seem to get.Boudica said:Are you just typing random words in circles? In one comment you managed to argue against yourself several times, setting up one straw man, knocking it down and then setting up an entirely opposing straw man and knocking that one down, too.
AzrealMaximillion said:You assume that if we had a Laissez-Faire market, people would make high quality clones all the time.AzrealMaximillion said:You may not have said anything about inferior clonesAzrealMaximillion said:Being stagnant is view negatively. Look at what happened to Guitar Hero. 23 Spinoffs within 5 years was what killed that craze. Profit wasn't even made off of the franchise due to excessive milkage. Look at how Call of Duty is looked upon now.AzrealMaximillion said:My point is that if the product is a clone and not as good, it will not sell. Again, look at Guitar Hero and Call of DutySee right there? How, pray tell, does that infer me saying "people would only make high quality clones all the time"? It doesn't. Because I never said that. People don't buy clones? Call of Duty is a clone? One of the highest selling franchises of all time, people don't buy? It's another example of you saying (typing) words without actually thinking about the argument you are replying to.Boudica said:If the product is bad, people won't buy it.

That's pretty much been what people have been trying to hell her all this time. Game too expensive for your entitled ass? Just buy the cheap knockoff made from the same code! Because how dare the original content creator get recognition and you know, eat.
