ok, so i have an ipod mini that i happen to like a lot. only problem is, it doesnt seem to work anymore.

it worked fine for a while, but then i had to wipe my hard drive do to a particularly nasty computer virus. after that i put most of my songs back, plus some new ones, but its stuck on an old library.

its telling me that it doesnt recognize my ipod, and it wont update my library but it will still charge my ipod. i have a windows xp computer if it matters.

before anyone says it, i am not getting a new ipod. i dont feel like i used it enough to retire it yet, and im too cheap to get a new one anyway. im using my ipod until it breaks or is so outdated that nothing will work with it anymore. i will add more details as i figure any of them out. please tell me what you can that might help.

update: well i went to the ipod site and im trying to restore according to its guidelines. but it says that at this point my ipod will appear in the source list. if thats the list with library and store and stuff on the left of the screen, then its not there. if not, then what is the source list?

update (again): to clarify, my its actually my computer, not itunes, that is saying that it doesnt recognize my ipod. it says that it doesnt recognize a usb device, and its saying something about drivers. i think i need to update or whatever these driver things. but i dont know what they are.

yet another update: i went to an apple store and they said to install new drivers or something, and that the best way to do that is to use the disc that came with the ipod to reinstall them. well i already tried that a while ago. maybe i need to try again. maybe newer versions of itunes are incompatible with the ipod mini i have. maybe on purpose.

You could try resetting the iPod to it's factory settings. I don't remember exactly how this is done, but I think it involves holding the center button and the menu button at the same time for a certain number of seconds.

I recommend Google.

It's already been said, but try resetting. Make sure you copied all your songs from the hidden folders on your iPod back into iTunes, then reset. When you reconnect, it should say that you need to delete everything off your iPod and resync with the "new" iTunes library. Do it (you'll have nothing to worry about if you've gotten everything off and back onto iTunes). It should resync, and you should be fine.

I've had to do that three different times, so I understand. It's a pain, but oh well. Also, it's technically illegal. Yay!
