Recently my parents decided I needed to see a psychologist. Fine. I don?t mind talking to a professional about school, grades, and the like, but he suggested I get an IQ test to ?let you know your strengths and weaknesses.? I am quite certain that I know my strengths and weaknesses myself, and I see absolutely no reason why I should get arbitrary numbers telling me what I?m good at.

Am I justified, or is this completely irrational?

You're justified. If you don't know what your strengths and weaknesses are just by living your life, then the results of a test aren't really going to help.

I refuse IQ tests simply because it would put a number on my intelligence. I don't want that; I know I'm smart.

You are completely justified. Testing your IQ doesn't really have much to do with psychology, unless its where your grades are a concern.

Numbers from an arbitrary test won't teach you shit. They can abrely sum up your intelligence as it is.

Sure person x might not be good at maths but they could be the world's greatest singer or something.

Don't let numbers take over your life. You are not a number! You are a free man!

I'd like to say the same, but I recently took a multiple intelligence questionnare and found myself to be a bland mix of everything. Which actually makes me pretty unique XD

They only exist for the purpose of existing. I hate things like that.
Saying "This is a statement" is an example of that.

IQ tests are stupid

i did one once and got a ridicuously high score, but that means absolutely nothing to me - i didnt need a test to know i could think for myself
you cant test intelligence on paper anyway

IQ tests seem pretty pointless to me. Assigning an arbitrary number to say: you are this smart seems a bit ridiculous. It seems to me like all it is is a way for insecure people with nothing else but trivia going for them to feel confident in their abilities.

IQ tests and the invention of mesuring 'IQ' were only invented to gauge weather or not you're retarded. None can conclusively prove your intelligence beyond "not retarded' anything else; espcailly on the internet is bullplop.

IQ tests are heavily biased around maths imo, atleast the ones I took. Was always really bad at maths and so the results were always meh, pretty sure they are considered inaccurate my most educational/work instituttes one of the many reason they arent mainstream or required in Europe.

When I was a teenager (around 13 I think) my teacher made my parents send me to a psychiatrist because she thought I was being agressive.
This teacher was a HUGE retard btw, no matter what happened she thought it was my fault.
Anyways, he made me do an IQ test (after finding out I was not agressive whatsoever, big surprise) just because we had some spare time to blow. I took the test and was told the result was "high enough" and that's all my parents were willing to tell me, because IQs change over time (or smth). Now that I'm older I know that the result was pretty high and I'm glad nobody told me because now that I'm older I also understand that they don't mean shit.
Seriously, just ignore the whole thing. Intelligence is not a number on a damn paper, it's a lifestyle.

How ironic that in a thread about IQ, you typed "cretin" instead of "certain".

I'd also like to second (or third, fourth, whatever) this.

IQ tests only test how good you are at puzzles. there are books that teach you how to do better in IQ tests.
real intelligence cant be presented in a number. you can tell by having a conversation if someone is or isn't intelligent.
Proper conversation that is, not banal chit-chat

You guys don't know what you are talking about. Before I went to law school, I got my degree is psychology. I can tell you that those tests are better than you think, as long as it's an official test. Though they aren't perfect.

Most IQ tests people take are not accredited IQ tests but if you go to a psychologist, he will give you an accredited one. Here's a quick test: If anyone tells you they got above 145 on an IQ test, they either didn't take an accredited one or they are just plain full of shit. The real IQ tests have a mean of 100 by definition. They have a standard deviation of 15 and the test will only cover 3 standard deviations from the mean of 100.

The test will generally not test your knowledge, only your ability to reason and process information. Just about anyone can learn facts with enough time. But not everyone can use those facts to reason inductively/deductively at the same level. Nor can everyone process information at the same speed. That is what the test will measure.

Also, they didn't just make these tests years ago arbitrarily and then kept giving them out. A LOT of study has gone into their creation and revision to make sure they are accurate.
