I, like I am sure many of you, am a member of an online community, namely this one. We are all familiar with the acronym of IRL, or In Real Life. It refers to meeting someone who you have met online in person.

I say that this acronym is acrchaic and inapplicable.

How is online interaction not "real life" anymore? In the olden days of the birth of the internet, such communications were alien and refered to as "fake". However, with the growth of the internet, to an almost ubiquitous status, how can one say that it is not "real"?

I mean I am a person. I have thoughts and emotions, opinions and concerns. I portray these traits to other people by means of a medium. The medium should not define their validity.

Me speaking in person, as to be communicating over a forum are exactly the same. The point is made, and the thought is communicated in both cases. So why is the latter percieved to be "fake"?

How can this stigma of internet nerds/geeks still be prevelant, when an arguably large population of most 1st world nations use the internet daily? Forums or chat rooms, even social networking sights like Facebook are used everyday by millions if not more to talk to one another. This interaction is just as valid as to meeting them in person.

That is why I say that the acronym IRL is no longer useful, since any interaction is real.

What do you say Escapists?

I have to agree with you to a point. I think that the In Real Life should refer to something slightly different.

We can say that today most communication is done either completely or assisted by some program or script on the internet.

More to come, have to take a lunch break lol

I agree.

Talking to someone face to face is no different then talking to someone through the internet.

Nah. I still consider people on any part of the internet to be 40 year-old pedophiles attempting to intice little girls and boys into their house for *ahem* cake and Ice cream.

OTI can't compare to IRL

But if I talk to you online I know nothing about you accept what you tell me. I admit in real life it is also possible to lie about oneself but I expect most people find it more difficult. In real life you have to give away certain pieces of information about yourself even if that information is just how you look. Online you can hide any details you want to.

This might be an interesting experiment actually. What information can you find about me other than that which I have volunteered in this forum and can not be verified? Can you really 'know' anything about other than what I choose to tell you is true?

"Real Life" simply refers to outside the internet in most situations, IMO. It's just a phrase that, while no longer technically relevant, still sticks. Like...Um...I'll think of one in a bit. =P
