So, you don't mean a criminal gang. Because everyone knows a Thieves' Guild has to be ruled by a benevolent scoundrel who's just looking out for the little guy.
Read that fbi link i sent about the HISTORY of the mafia's my friend... and see where THAT trope you reference comes from.
( and Robin Hood, rather relatedly )

lets see... La Costra Nostra, Crips, Bloods, Hell's Angels, MS-13, Mexican Mafia, Aryan Brotherhood, shall i go on?
"Never kill anyone on the job. This is not the Dark Brotherhood." - Armand Christophe, doyen of the Thieves' Guild in the Imperial City. I'd say the abovementioned are far closer to the Dark Brotherhood.
well, Simulord, I got caught up in his usage of that term, as well.
I'm not sure what you're quoting, but IRL, the turned-american mafia's had a code against killing police ( whereas south of the border that is most assuredly not the case )...
which i find amusing in light of their origins. ( or is it because of their origins, not wanting a repeat? )
A thread about a Thieves' Guild with someone not getting an Oblivion reference?

the "thieves guild" pretty much evolved into what we know today as The Mafia.

*casts Invisibility*
*gets to safe distance*
*removes Cowl of the Gray Fox*
Gray Fox? Yeah, I saw him. He went...
*crosses arms, points in one direction with one hand and the opposite direction with other hand*
THAT-A-WAY!

If i say i know more about "real thieves guilds" than Oblivion, would that excuse me?

My preference is for games i do not consider "console games" ( i know, it's both ) - not knocking them, just not my preference.

Yes, this "gray fox" sounds very 'robin hood' - again, check the history to see why that trope sunk in.
Sicily didn't appreciate being occupied any more than the Saxon English did, apparently.

Also, I ask you to compare to the American (mostly film ) love of "gangsters" as the robin hood, little guy. DON'T make me sing " A man named Jayne".

* ps: you guys are cracking me up!

I remembered that there was a National Rifle Association.
This still sounds potentially devastating for the public.
I don't remember getting into the NRA by giving a homeless man with a cool name a coin.

That's easy. If there were, they wouldn't exist anymore if it became public knowledge that a Thieves Guild existed.

But, this world is HUGE! There are 6 BILLION people on this planet. To say there is none is quite... Senseless.

Oo oo, I wanna join!
I wonder if there's anything legit that's similar to the Dark Brotherhood. Not just angsty teenagers trying to summon satan or whatever. But like a big assassinating occultist group that has lasted throughout time to exist now. .

I suppose there wouldn't be a real way of finding that out, huh?

That's because you joined the public front organisation not the true NRA.

That sounds like a bad idea... Besides, aren't lockpicks illegal?
I don't think so: http://www.lockpickshop.com/LS.html
D'oh. I thought I'd heard someone in a movie casually mentioning lockpicks are illegal (It was some guy trying to get through airport security).

Maybe I should stop trusting stuff I hear in movies...

Definitely. I mean, I've got an old VHS tape somewhere in the house that "proves" Bruce Willis landed on an asteroid if we're going by movie standards...

We need a Thieves Guild so that we can finally regulate robbery-- history shows us that it is an unavoidable consequence of people living in a society with an unequal distribution of wealth, therefore we should give all thieves licenses to steal so that we can keep track of how much is stolen and keep it within an acceptable range.

And let's not forget about those four separate terrorist plots he (with the help of 4 different sidekicks) foiled.

Silly question, but have you ever heard of a Thieves Guild in the USA? I recently discovered there are guilds for guys that do ringmail "historically accurate", guilds for guys that dress in period correct Cowboy clothing, so y'know... where's the Thieves Guild?

We could have a dagger collection, or show off our sneak suits, pop practice locks, hold workshops to show how to hotwire older vehicles (in junk yards) and so on.
you know that sounds pretty interesting but a bad idea because of teaching people of how to do stuff that could be used illegally

I'm reasonably certain that in order to become a professional locksmith you need to be part of the guild, much like the magicians guild. The point of these organizations is to protect their secrets and make sure not everyone has access to potentially dangerous skills, but still enables some to make a legal living out of it. You can hire a locksmith the open your door if you lock yourself out of your house, provided you can show identification that the house is yours.

Brokenglove's got the right idear. I mean, I'll tell ya right now I'd use it for evil, but gentlemanly evil. I wouldn't slash up couches and shit (I've seen some apartments get this kind of treatment).

In, out, nobody the wiser. It casually comes up in conversation, "Honey do you know where I put that ONE watch?"
