Irony Is...

Me and a pal in my Creative Writing class were discussing shitty Nicholas Cage movies and inevitably Con Air comes up. So this one kid who we hate as he always talks yet never has anything to say states the following: "Say what you will...but a bunch of idiots on a plane singing a song from a guy who died in a plane crash...that is in and of itself...irony."

Naturally me and this pal will always define irony with that. In an ironic fashion.

As for irony, it's ironic when you're dream girl lives in the flat below you and you don't actually have any feelings for her besides friendship. Also, crashing a plane on you're first ever flight. What's even more ironic is if you're in a train and the plane you would have taken lands on said train mid-journey...

What she's using is situational irony, whether she realises it or not. Which means that it's rather ironic that so many people point out her misuse of the word ironic.

Even if it wasn't situational irony and she was incorrectly using the word, there have been chain emails sent around about this subject. Once a subject hits chain emails, it's like calling Godwin's. It's no longer witty or funny. Everyone who reads it will look at you and think you're parroting a website.

Ehhh... It may technically be irony, but in the same way that a squeaky hammer is technically a weapon. It's a bit of a stretch, more of a loophole than a bona fide case.

On topic though, last week, our company's resident self-appointed health and safety whiner fell down the stairs.

Oh, geez.

Although I detest all caps, IRONY IS NOT AN AMUSING COINCIDENCE. It is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you expect to occur.

For instance, in one of my favorite books- The Lord of the Flies- the fire that the boys recklessly spawn within the first third or so of the story was created to save their lives, (to catch the attention of a plane or ship, to be more specific). However, it eats away a hefty chunk of the forest, taking many lives with it.

Then, at the conclusion of the book- when a portion of the boys go batshit insane- they set a fire to kill the protagonist. However, this fire catches the attention of a passing ship, saving the lives of the surviving boys.

Irony is NOT hating music and then marrying a musician. Irony is giving up on your music to avoid the life of a musician, then marrying one.
