If I get a really bad virus I just do a system restore to a day before I got the virus. Remember, kids: life has save points.

Try a different Antivirus? I sue free AVG and I've never had a problem I couldn't get rid of. Even if it won't get rid of the virus for you it will tell you where it is, I've had to locate and destroy a few trojans... In any case you could always back up your data somewhere and format your hard drive.

Well it sounds likely that it is a virus (this many hardware problems are rare to have at the same time).

So the pieces of advice I can give you are like so:

1. do ctrl+alt++del and look at your processes and see if any are virus-like (could list them here too).
2. go to run then type msconfig and go to your startup tab. List whats there (omit anything you are sure about).

These 2 have a high chance of identifying a virus.

There is another alternative:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

burn the iso to a cd or dvd and then use it when you restart your computer.
it has a functionality called live cd where you can boot the OS from the disk to try it out, you can also modify your files while on it (backing up for example).
If your hardware all works on live cd then it will confirm that it is a virus (or malware, spyware etc.)

for more info on it:

You could try ComboFix.

http://www.combofix.org/

I've read that it's really, really powerful, something you only use if no other anti-virus software works.

I miss the days of :

Code:
c:/>Format C:/
Not much helps a computer operate with better performance than a clean reinstall.

Remember kids viruses can also infect your restore points so you think you have gotten rid of it by restoring when in fact you haven't.

im using windows XP

ive managed to get the 1 usb internet stick to work (a flashing light on it has come on) but when i try to load the internet it says that it needs to reinnstall clicking yes does nothing, internet explorer just says there is a problem and it carnt connect and Mcafee still wont turn on its live protection it just turns on then instanly turns off and scanning still wont start. Plus its loading and booting up very slowly (does this sound ike its a virus)

edit: ive also loaded AVG onto a CD and tryed to use that but it simply wont load
Check to see if your plug and play service is working.

In the run box type 'services.msc'

Scroll down till you find plug and play and then ensure that it is active, if it isn't then right click and select start. This will now display the contents of the device manager. It may also help with your internet access device, specifically if it is a plug and play device.

Yeah, a lot of the sources I saw said that it's actually pretty risky to use.
