I dont know if its just me, but I've been taking alot of nostalgia trips on youtube as of late. First it was Raptor: Call of the shadows; Then Sonic 2; Then the .hack quadriliagy; Then .hack GU; Then Banjo-Kazooie; then Diddy Kong Racing; Battlezone 1 then 2; Freespace; Zelda: Majora's Mask; and Mario 64.

Have games gotten so bad lately that I just cant stop longing for the magic of old day game developers? Before fat cats started monetizing games...

I don't think games have been that bad.. There are a few nice titles I've picked up this year...
Xenoblade Chronicles, The Witcher 2 (360), Pokemon Black 2.

I admit I've been looking at my backlog lately, but that might also be because I think games are too expensive at launch and I wait until they drop in price.

Every year is the Year of Nostalgia for me.

I am currently playing Mario and Donkey Kong Country again. Loved those games.
Same here. I just played Kirby Super Star with my 6-year-old brother the other day.

Most of my old consoles are hooked up 24/7.

Yes.

XCOM!

Kickstarter for old-school games like Star Citizen and Project Eternity are the biggest announcements this year. Althought they won't be released until two years more it shows nostalgia for genres other than FPS games.

A genre supposed to be dead like adventures games brought us the game of the year: The Walking Dead.

I think this is the year developers realized that we don't want to play the freaking same game every year. We want games that are not just FPS. Or FPS that are not completely linear. Also we want games that get finished, but are not an interactive movie with QTE and no difficulty at all. This year developers decided that maybe gamers can think and have some ability to play something a little more complex and we want good gameplay, not just cinematic graphics.

More than nostalgia, I think that alongside next-gen coming with exciting new technology, looking at gaming past can bring us an amazing gaming future.

I've really enjoyed Xenoblade, Last Story, Skyward Sword...
Then I had a really crazy LoL run in the spring and early summer.
But also some old games I've played like WarcraftIII

Monetize just means making money off them. Companies have always made money off games since the days of the arcade. Be more careful with your terms.

Also, welcome to nostalgia. It's less based on what's happening in the world and more based on the fact that you're getting older and idealizing your past. Just because I watch an episode of Batman: TAS doesn't mean TV today sucks, it means I want to watch a show from my past. It also does make nostalgic shows good. DBZ still sucks even if its nostalgic.

I've been longing for that for the last 4 or 5 years or so.

Every year that had years preceding it is the year for nostalgia.

Completely agreed.

For every good game that is remembered, there are two terrible ones that aren't.

2012 is a crap year for nostalgia.

Now, 2008 on the other hand... That was a superb year for nostalgia. Absolutely great year. Not only did I start replaying some of my old PS1 games like Final Fantasy IX and Breath Of Fire III, I found amazing games I'd previously missed out on, like Legend Of Mana and Vagrant Story. Absolutely fantastic, the lot of them. The best run Square ever had was the run of games they made for PS1. Also, 2008 was the year I finally got round to playing Deus Ex and Ocarina Of Time. They've both aged a fair bit, but still trounce anything available now.

Man, they don't make them like they used to. And nostalgia certainly isn't now what it was in 2008...
My favorite era for Square was most definitely the 16-bit era!

Ah, Square. How I will miss you back when you were good/mattered (Eidos doesn't count!). Oh well, at least Atlus has stepped up to take your place. :p

OT: You kidding? 2012 gave us Spec Ops: The Line, Dishonored, and XCOM. It has been a great year for games, dunno what you are talking about. I don't think I have replayed any games this year (yet anyway. a new run through Dishonored is looking mighty tempting). Take off your nostalgia goggles, boyo. Things are going just fine. Better, even. :p

This year has been amazing, actually. Not only have there been a ton of great games, but a ton of variety too. Warning: List incoming.
-Tribes: Ascend
-Mark of the Ninja
-Mass Effect 3
-Torchlight II
-Sleeping Dogs
-Natural Selection 2
-FTL
-XCOM: Enemy Uknown
-Civilization V: Gods and Kings (so good that it redeemed Civ V, so I count it)
-Darksiders 2
-Endless Space
-Assassin's Creed 3
-Journey
-Legend of Grimrock

And I know I'm missing a lot here. Yeah, at first I thought this year was gonna suck. But now...it might be my favorite year for gaming ever.

Not another one of these threads.

I love a lot of my older games as much as the next guy, but that doesn't mean games today suck in comparison. In fact, in some ways, games have vastly improved. There are still plenty of great games out there, you just need to know where to look.

Yeah, the games are pretty bad, including we are really lacking some of the classic genre's. I've been buying a lot of classic games because I just can't find any interesting shoot 'em ups, RTS, etc. any more.

Maybe some of you guys will start liking the 2012 titles in about 5-10 years. Since it`s all going downhill the 2017 generation must be even more shitty.
To be serious there are enough entertaining games out this year, more than i could buy and i even had fun with them, unbelievable isn`t it?

Well this year I started playing through the old Tom Clancy games like Rogue Spear, bought a Mega Drive II and Sonic/Streets of Rage and found open source remakes of Transport Tycoon and Theme Hospital.

Been good so far :)

Oh.

I thought 2012 was the year of apocalyptic fear...

Will be missing all the Zombie flicks in the future.

Exactly my thoughts.
Making money from games is nothing new. It's a fucking business after all.
I wish we'd all stop bitching about it. I know that'll never happen but I can dream.
