this is pretty much a rehash of somthing I said on another thread

its also only[/B] my opnion, I dont expect anyone to agree or take it too seriously

now Im not about to chastize people for having different opinions or generalising everyone into haveing the same opnion, that kind of thing I dont like ...and yeah perhaps the fact that this is the internet makes my point redundant but I must say it anyway

but it just seems that for some reason people seem to enjoy hating or complaing about games more than actually playing them

and I dont mean just "bad" games...like say your standard movie to game cash in

no but also decent games, seaquels, good games and games loved by the masses, and DEFIENTLY the seaquels

if its different its bad....if its not the same its bad....if its part of a series its bad...if its original its still bad...if it doesnt completley redefine somthing its bad... ect ect

oh and we dont even have to worry about the actual GAME no

did you watch the trailer? read an article that vaugley said somthing you dont like? are they going to *gasp* change somthing? its time to spread the DOOM! because the game now SUCKS!!

how do you actually know this?...you just do

anyway...lets talk about IGN, you know what? I like IGN

sure say what you will about their reveiws or the quality of their journalism, generally some say they overate games because alot of games have a high score, but I like that

because they actually seem more about enjoying games rather than hating or bitching about them, usually a game gets a low score indicates its kinda averge,

all I do is look at the score if its a 7 or 8 then I know its not horrible and then I can go enjoy the game on my own terms

because Im sure some people do...but I DONT enjoy hating things I DONT enjoy being disapointed that x seaquel didnt match my rediculously high expections and I DONT enjoy crying about the state of the industry

disscusion value[/B] do you feel that people are overly negative/ somwhat self entitled when it comes to gaming? is such an attitude somtimes nessicary?

and I Understand that certain levels of elitism is kind of needed, especially if one wanted to get games to be better in all those good ways we always talk about, but should that get in the way of actually enjoying them in the first place?

People just love to complain. It's that little asshole inside of us who just wants to come out and tell other people how their work sucks.

This very much.

I like to enjoy games, even pretty bad games I can wring a few hours worth of fun out of before I never touch them again.

Complaining about and hating everything really isn't fun...

I have no problem with constructive criticism, but I can see what you're getting at. Nerd culture in general tends to act like any work of art that isn't tailored specifically to their needs is a personal slight. Man-child syndrome, basically. Again, constructive criticism [not 'they raeped my childhood =3!!111] is essential for improvement, but the gaming community does not seem to be particularly adept at it.

Also, could you please fix your original post? Firefox usually comes with a spell-checker, and capital letters are only a shift-key away.

This is pretty much the way I see it as well. Enjoying things is WAY better than not enjoying them. Even if I don't like a game personally I try to find the qualities that other people find appealing in them, it's actually really interesting when you do it that way, and it helps keep you open-minded about games. Funny thing to note though: In my experience when someone says "They really don't understand the appeal" of something (a Vija game in this case) they probably haven't ACTUALLY looked for the reason that people like it.

OP. You have just said the most sensible thing I have heard in about a month.

Just because something is not perfect, just because it is not the earthly manifestation of Christ, (*cough just because it's not made by Valve *cough) does not mean it is worthless and not worth a moment of your time.

I just enjoy games for what they are. Instead of comparing a sequel to it's predecessor, I mark it on its own merits. If something is samey, you cant blame the developers for not fixing what isn't broken, especially if the public raves about it. Let's take Call of Duty for example here:

CoD4 was met with rave reviews and public reception was it not? Then why do we complain at Activision when they rehash it each year? You got what they thought you wanted. Yet you still complain. I can guarantee if MW3 tries to change up the formula a bit, people will hate it even more. People are impossible to please, and the consumer is what is destroying this industry.

I'd rather people be overly critical than too lenient in terms of judging games. Though, I have pretty low standards, myself.

That is some terrible spelling and grammar. I agree though: some people just love to complain. The review scores are skewered so that 7-8 means mediocre, or at least that's how people seem to interpret them.

Some people aren't happy if they can't *****. Bitching can be cathartic, so long as it sticks to the thing and then you get back to normality.

I most recently saw exactly that with the Mortal Kombat show. A guy was just bitching it out and I said "So don't watch a show you don't like" and his response was "How do I have an opinion if I don't watch it?" which struck me as redundant since his post was about how the show would never be good and that it the worst shit he'd seen in a long time.

I'll divide my response into 4 parts:

1. Some people like complaining, and will actively seek out any thread about a game they dislike and start attacking it, regardless of whether or not that's what the threads about. Fallout 3 is my goto game for any "games you hate" thread, but if I see a thread just generally discussing the game I'll likely not post. Not everyone resists that temptation leading to a lot of spammed hate especially in threads about Portal, Valve in general and of course, Call of Duty.

2. Sometimes negative reactions to proposed, rumoured or actual changes are justified and are inspired not by a hatred of the series, but a love of it. if people love a series like Mass Effect I think it's understandable for them to voice their concern if they believe that the series is going to be changed in ways that will make them love it less.

3. This forum has a really bad habit of picking up opinions from certain contributors and enshrining them as established fact, and reiterating those 'facts' ad nauseum. As much as I enjoy Zero Punctuation and Extra Credits I do sometimes wish that they didn't have quite such an overbearing influence on discussion here. Sequel hate seems to be in vogue at the moment, which is nonsense, given that most of the most eagerly awaited games of this year and next are sequels.

And finally 4. Some games are bad, or lazy, or wholly unambitious, and there's nothing wrong with saying that, so long as it's said in an interesting, constructive, or amusing way.

I don't see the point of discussing this.

Side 1: "We should all accept games for the entertainment value inherent within, them, without judging so harshly. Other people are stupid for not thinking like me blah blah accentuate the positive blah."

Side 2: *quotes Yahtzee about nothing improving without criticism*

I think the "correct" view to take is somewhere in the middle. If I enjoy a game without admitting to myself that it has flaws or identifying where the flaws are, I run the risk of becoming a fanboy and not truly appreciating what I'm enjoying. Without analysis, I'm just consuming entertainment. But if I'm too quick to pass judgment, I risk becoming Yahtzee (an overly-negative person who treats every game as a "review in the making" and doesn't stop to just play.) It's important to have actual fun and feel pressured to turn my hobby so serious I can't enjoy it.

So what I'm saying is, where can this discussion really go? We all fall somewhere on this scale between total enjoyment or total critique. For myself, if I play a game and I'm not having fun, I'm going to go ahead and say why. Fortunately I'm playing Just Cause 2 right now and thus have no reason to really be cross about anything gaming-related.

I'm just gonna stay neutral as always, the best option naturally. But i'm annoyed that those Bioware haters and/or concerned fans are starting to colour by opinion towards ME3...

[sub]Bastards![/sub]

Basically unless you really hate the game with everything you have and can provide valid reasons why, stop bitching at it like it just pimpslapped your mother.

I'm not trying to say side 1 is the way to go, as I said some critizm and/or elitism is a good thing

however, and to be honest I am talking about the escapist to an extent, it seems that hate and nagativity are so commonplace and its just this big toxic...thing of hate, when really what happened to enjoying and liking games that may not be the second coming of christ? (or from valve, or from Bioware providing they match your standards)

as somone said Yahtzee and extra credits seem to have a large influence here...but thats only in very very very general terms

I guess you could say they balance each other out

People are entitled to their own opinion. Dissent is a good thing, it allows us to see that not everything is perfect. I mean I might think Deus Ex is God's gift to man but a lot of other people might think it's an aging widow about to be put down.
