It's a type of steampunk, not the standard since it has tech based of what isn't steam powered.
But I don't think "hydro-punk" is a real thing.

Never even heard the term Hydropunk before. If there is such a classification, wouldn't it just fall under Steampunk? Steam is essentially just water, correct? The only way I can envision Hydropunk technology would be in the form of waterwheels and gravity/kinetic water structures, i.e. waterfalls and grand wheels. Though it would just inevitably become Steampunk or down a different path into Fantasy altogether.

Bioshock is a spattering of many technologies, designs and art forms. The thing about Bioshock though, is you can imagine Rapture without the fact of it being underwater. There are times you forget that you're many fathoms into the abyss, which was kind of the point I would imagine. It sets up the atmosphere, and toggles a few buttons in your psyche, but overall the underwater bit in Bioshock is mostly unimportant, in my opinion.

Neither, BioShock is raygun gothic. The slick, curvy designs and psuedo-future aesthetic lends itself from a time in American history where we had finally figured out that the greatest innovation that humanity has ever invented had yet to be discovered(I.E. the 50's).

The biggest difference between that and SteamPunk was that at the turn on the century the prevailing attitude towards scientific innovation at the turn of the century was that everything worth discovering had been discovered, so it was instead geared towards futurizing existing technologies like steam(Hence the term Steampunk).

I don`t think the designers originally wanted to fall under a specific punk label. They made what seemed to work at the time, and while Rapture itself is art deco the rest is a mash-up of what they liked and seemed appropriate.

I don`t think labeling it will do justice for the designers who created it.

this just came up during a conversation while playing the game. mostly trying to figure out what theme the story is. we have some really random discussions while playing video game this topic popped up shortly after a legend of zelda reference about needing a bigger wallet in game.
long story short (to late) just another random topic during game play.
