Is Encyclopedia Dramatica suppose to be funny?

Well yea its supposed to be funny, albeit in a very cynical "nothing is sacred" fashion. Personally I think its hit or miss, but when I find a really great page its a wonderful experience.

I would say in general there are three main types of page:
-pages about real life politics\history\ect., filled with lies, blatant falsehoods and deliberately made as offensive as possible. written primarily to offend thin skinned people
-Pages about E-celebs who have been smart enough to not actively fall into the internet drama blackhole. Composed of a mix of truth, lies and misrepresentation of actual events, written mostly to offend these people and their fanboys.
-Pages chronicling the cycle of trolling and drama around particularly easy to provoke E-famous types (see also: Cris-Chan), these normally contain mostly facts, just spun to make the person look as bad as possible, and are IMO the most funny pages.

Also I find it suspect when people try to claim ED is somehow "loyal" to GG when they have pages shitting on Milo, Matt, and the movement as a whole complete with a stab at KIA users.

Nothing is sacred to ED. When it comes to their mockery everything is either a target, or an even bigger target.

Maybe at some point some of the articles had a sort of fuck everyone we are punching them up/down.

Now it's just filled with really bitter people and half the articles made on there just come off as really mean trolling archives as opposed to being a record for people who really looked foolish on the internet.

The forums aren't any better either...by a large margin.

Like a lot of internet memes, people started trying way too hard to keep it going, and that killed a lot of the humor. Chris-chan is an amusing car wreck all by himself, but when you've got people doing really insane shit to him just to try and top previous entries, or generate more content for the site, you end up with a bunch of internet try hards doing borderline illegal shit to a mentally ill person for the LOLs.

Same thing with groups, the 4Chan, Something Awful, and ED tirades against furries started out being over the top, but was mostly just regulated to pasting links to the more fucked up things out there and laughing at them. Then, when that got old, they started screwing directly with them in really kind of fucked up ways. Back at that point, I regularly visited all those sites, and got a kick at laughing at the weirdos on the internet, then dumbasses came in, took things too far, and it got to the point that once laughable sites or people were so inundated with trolls and people doxxing them that the people that once were easy to mock became sympathetic compared to the sociopaths tormenting them.

It just feels like it's trying so hard. Feels like it could have been more effective in its ostensive purpose if traded in a little more dry satire and a little less thirteen year old's enthusiasm for profanity, but maybe I'm simply misunderstanding it. That does seem to be the rather tiresome drive of 99.9% of Chan activity, at the end of the day. To be misunderstood.

She verified she was an edgy teen saying edgy things to offend and upset people. No evidence of what you suggested, and the only people who claim otherwise have an agenda.

I don't think you understand the case you're arguing.

It was several posts, including one where she took a close-up picture of her cousin's crotch in a bathing suit. The police couldn't arrest her as the statute of limitations had expired.

If you consider calling out lying paedophiles and 'agenda' then I guess you';re right.

It's also worth pointing out the people who defend these paedos only do so because they agree with their politics. The logs ARE evidence of what I suggested, her joke defence is entirely laughable.

I think your going to have to provide a source for all that. If you've actually got one, which, generally anyone trying to sell that story don't.

Again, people stole storage from the private server and had it for several months, and the best they could come up with was one line from a chatlog they posted out of context to make it sound worse than it was, and even only then it only stuck with people predisposed to dislike nyberg.

Frankly, I'm surprised no one's managed to get their provider to shut them down.

It's happened multiple times already. ED has had to shut down and move to a variety of servers and flash donation drives just to keep going. But the ED of now is a shell of it's former self.
Often times the articles are just downright offensive. No redeeming factors about it.

It's especially bad when they get into the political aspects of things where it is very much not ironic.

Well I mean the articles are specifically designed to be offensive. I guess I don't recall a time back in the "good ole days" of ED when they were more "funny", but to me their articles have always been very hostile in nature. That doesn't mean the information isn't true though. Often times the articles are written with an obsessive (almost stalker-level) amount of detail of the person's life. So I mean... you can hate them and find them offensive, as most do, but that doesn't mean their information is wrong.

Also answering your question - some of it's funny, a lot of it is just weird and trying too hard but if you want a good laugh, go read about anyone on deviantart because those parades of mass failure are just hilarious.

I remember reading the Chris-Chan saga. All I could think of is how disturbing the events were and the level of detail was even worse. I distinctly remember them being able to state that his car has issues with the engine mounts based off the audio of one of his videos. Who pays that much attention? Then there were the calls to his family and harassing messages that are recorded gleefully. I must concede, there was a moment of clarity where someone stated in the article that it was fair for the family to believe there was a grand conspiracy against them because, thanks to the denizens of ED, there technically was.

It always seemed to appeal to the edgelord types who rely on being assholes to be funny. Thing is, I just see them as irredeemable assholes. I've been told that's the whole appeal, to which I just respond with befuddlement. What joy can be found in tormenting others if you aren't a sociopath? It's even more extreme than the typical "trolling" consisting of screaming obscenities into a microphone or stating stupid/offensive opinions that's apparently so fucking funny.

As others have stated in the thread, EDF used to be a simple recorder of stupid 4chan tier shit and regular drama that happened with Class A drama queens on the internet. Most- if not all of the times EDF never partook in any of the shenanigans that occurred unless the victim in questions personally took the fight to them (through forum posts or mod emails.)
At some point though the harassers and assholes started signing up on the site and started using the place as a vehicle for their own harassment shit.
This is shown by the rampant doxxing of people even within the forums and why they had to shut down and switch servers a bazillion times because even countries with piss standards didn't want to deal with the possibly disastrous ramifications for hosting a site with that much vitriol.

On top of that fact is that like all things- a lot of the early people who simply made asshole articles 'grew up' in a sense and fucked off the site. So now all you have is a site filled with racist, sexist, (any -ist or -phobic you name it.) that aren't BLATANTLY ironic with a sprinkling of well adjusted if not morally murky assholes.
If you look at one of their super old articles there was a lot of blatant tongue in cheek offesniveness to it that is self aware in how absolutely shit what they are writing is.
The new ones however are written with the fervor of an idiot and edgelord who actually believes the crap they are writing.

yes EDF has gotten steadily more cannibalistic, we've gone from being focused on the faggots outside the site to the faggots within the site. forum evolved as new staff came in, thats pretty much all there is to it

The thing is, Encyclopedia Dramatica gets its kicks from targeting completely innocent members of the public. The whole Chris-chan saga was interesting and provided an interesting biographical view of a misogynistic and delusional man-child. A combination of societal development and understanding of women stuck around pre-teen levels with the sexuality of an adult (so basically like Return of Kings with less arrogance). The chronicles of Chris-chan is the best thing to ever come out of ED.

When ED goes after pretty much anyone that disagrees with them it comes off as extremely petty and makes me wonder who's really being "triggered". Being misanthropic, sarcastic and nihilistic is one thing but ED nowadays has the level of wit and self-awareness of a high school bully. And no, not one of the bullies that's part of the social elite that picks on others to show dominance, one of the bullies that's bitter that they can't achieve anything worthwhile so they take their anger out on people more socially inept than they are.

There's a difference between "we just have different senses of humour" and "these people are genuinely a bunch of creeps". I love plenty of "offensive" comedy, much of it would likely provoke these guys because it attacks their echo chambers. But there's a difference between offensive aggression and spitefulness.
