Fan voting is pointless anyway, if we had a way to have fan discussion about it we could maybe even have a laugh about what game is the ABSOLUTE SHITTEST and our reasons behind them, it'd at least bring together people who all hate the game together.

Kind of right there in the title. Is fan voting becoming toxic? I ask this because of a Screwattack video that just went up declaring their "Worst game of 2013". 3rd was Sonic Lost World, 2nd was Final Fantasy All the Bravest, and the worst game of the year was.....Family Party 30 great games. Now I can't actually speak on the quality of these as I have not played a single one. However I doubt Sonic Lost World is as bad as this vote would imply and I do eventually intend to add it to my collection. Still all these games looked at least playable and complete. The game I expected to be at the top of the list was Ride to Hell Retribution. Now if anyone has seen even one review of this game they know just how bad it is and how unfinished it is. If I remember correctly the Spike VGA's also operated in part on a fan vote. This video though is evidence that fan voting is becoming more and more toxic.

By toxic I mean hurting our chances of being taken seriously. We have a Sonic game, Final Fantasy game, and Family game, two franchises and a genre that has garnered unprecedented hate from "hardcore" gamers in recent years. Now I know fan voting is fun and hoping your game comes out on top on things is great and all that, but if this literally is supposed to be Screwattack's worst game of the year I think its a poor choice. Sites either need to create new categories like the site's "official" games and the "fan" games or just block fans off from certain categories. I know this last part is a bit incomprehensible but I trust you guys will know what I'm trying to say at least. So what do you think? Do you think fan voting is becoming more toxic as gaming and gaming sites grow and do you think sites need to take steps to insure their credibility in the future?
So you think one list is bullshit. Woop dee friggin doo. This is the internet and there are probably thousands of lists out there. Find one you agree with.

What, you don't think the community should be involved in questions to the community? So who decides their opinion then? You?

I think the point the OP is trying to get across is that compared to 'professional' reviewers, fans tend to exaggerate a wee bit. Take for example Metacritic scores. Often games which got 80% or more- like ME3 for example- get panned by fans moreso than they deserve. Fans get emotional when it comes to favorite IP's, so when they felt betrayed by ME3's ending they overreacted a bit.
Anyway, this phenomenon can also be seen in fan votes for 'Top X' lists, and its this which the OP is getting upset with. Which is perfectly alright.

I would rather win a GDCA over a VGA anyday. The GDCA are pretty much the Oscars of the game world. To me, I pay attention to those in March, and just pretty much ignore anything except a couple media awards.

Oh man, I stay away from those types of polls. Far, far, faaaaaaarrr away. I don't understand how people can get so offended by someone else's opinion on a game. Politics, religion, healthcare, wars, okay I can understand. But the hatred that goes into the comments and voting for those types of things is beyond my understanding.

Example: I said in my review of RE6 that, while the game wasn't soul crushingly bad, it certainly wasn't the greatest game ever made. Someone jumped on me instantly, said I sucked at reviewing stuff, said it was the worst game ever, and that I should go back to playing CoD--since clearly that was the only game I had ever played since I enjoyed RE6 and thus I'm clearly only twelve years old--and leave the Resident Evil series alone for the true fans. The idea that that person got that upset and made that many conclusions about me because of one sentence was baffling to me.

So yes, I think fan voting, and fans themselves in many cases, has become toxic. I've stopped reading comments on sites and articles like that because it makes me ill.

First I don't think that gaming discussions are any more or less toxic than any other online voting community. We might be a little more damaging just because as the internet goes we kinda came first, set up shop and being a "young" industry there is nobody to tell us any better.

Compare it to the movies. Summer Blockbusters are the equivalent of the voters choice "best movies" of the year and are almost invariably made up of movies that have next to no functional plot and focus explosions and big tits. They are almost always a fun ride though. Now look at the movies that win awards, especially Emmys. They are "crap" movies that nobody watches because they aren't a lot of fun. (I generally don't like all or most of those movies and i think they've gotten so hard on making movies that almost specifically DON'T appeal to the masses that many of their movies could be considered masturbation.

If the gaming industry had an equivalent every year the best game of the year would be some indy game made by a top producer that hardly anybody had played, even fewer people understood but damn wasn't it pretty.

One thing we would benefit from however would be an official body to make semi-official lists that actually held some weight.

Comments towards the people, quite toxic. The games you mentioned, they deserve the harshest of criticisms.

Fan voting? toxic?
*Looks over at all the rage over the Papers Please Goty
Nah. You're being silly.

In all seriousness, I wouldn't just narrow it down to voting. Fandoms in general can be pretty malevolent beasts. Of course, I don't mean every fan, but all I'm saying is, you put a bunch of fans of anything on the internet together, and an argument over something is going to break out, and more likely sooner than later.
