Is fraps worth the cost?

With that much RAM and that fast a CPU, you should be okay. It really depends on the game though, so I recommend trying the demo if you haven't already.

Using FRAPS, with my fairly modest setup (2.4GHz quadcore, 8800 GT mildly overclocked), I can record FEAR 2 in 1280x1024 resoultion at 30 FPS, with most of the graphical effects turned up, without any noticible slowdown. I think that's pretty good. Others are right about the size, though- five minutes of that footage in its raw form is 3.9GB. If you're going to record to an exterior hard drive, ensure that it can handle the output at full speed, or you're likely to get stuttering.

Remember that buying FRAPS gets you access to all future updates, too. Just be sure to remember what Email address you registered it with, because I've never been able to find a way to change it.

Well people, Wegame let me down epicly, as it can't record anything, while the fraps trial seems to be working beautifully. I am currently uploading a 30 second test onto youtube, so we'll see how things work from there. ^.^ When i do buy it, i may do a blind run of Dragon Age, but that game pissed me off rather easily initially, so i never finished it. That being said, if this works, it still may be high on the list. =3
Yeah tbh WeGame was the worst one I tried. If you need any help w/ video compression/codecs etc (recommend compressing in Sony Vegas or some such program before YouTubing) chuck me a PM.

Yeah... my FRAPS folder contains 221G at the moment... sooo yah.
But I do have 1TB of HD space, so I'll be fine.
And I don't get any lag with 12G RAM and 2 HD5870's, oh am I bragging again? Sorry XD

nope. I would never pay for it. Maybe if they reduced the recording time to 15 seconds I would but at 30 seconds I can live with it. I can always edit the screenshot and save it differently to make it smaller.

Great program. Definately worth the buy. Records in great quality too.

Here is one of my youtube videos that I recorded with Fraps.

Like Quality? Dislike?

Culmination of all my past 1 hour of work, a 20 MB 31 second video of dragon age: origins, recorded with fraps and compressed with Virtualdub

Would someone be so kind as to donate 37 dollars now? xD

FRAPs is good, but it kills performance bad. BioShock 2 I play at over 100 FPS. Recorded in FRAPs... 15 FPS. Here is one of my videos.

It also depends greatly on your computer, particularly HDD transfer speeds, and CPU power. Also depends on the settings you record with, including game settings and output settings. This is Crysis: Warhead on enthusiast with 2X AA at 1920 X 1080 you can see FRAPs kill performance.

Anyway it is worth it, if not for recording, just for the screen shots. I always have FRAPs running.
Posted a video just now, above your post. How would you rate the quality? I believe the game itself was on maximum settings. =3

Wegame works, I think. I really never tried.
But I do suggest you try x-fire if none of that works out.

It can record, as well as being an IM that works like steam's game overlay except with any game, while it isn't as smooth as steam's overlay you can record and junk. And link your MSN and other IM/social things.

As mentioned, if you have the HD Space, go for it. After that the only limitation would be your imagination. But heed the warnings here because it eats up space like no ones business. :)
got a secondary 1 TB hard drive ^.^ with 700 GB left on it, i mainly use it for my steam games, but nao it serves a new purpose =3

Try the demo. That's what it's there for.

If you like what you get in the 30 second clips the demo lets you take, then buy it.
That's what I did when I had fraps on my old computer. Downloaded the demo, and tested it. Liked the results, but unfortunately could not buy it.
