both Half life 1 and OOT was release in 1998. and compare both of them. HL1 looks like 10 years leap over it.
From what I've heard HL1 looks pretty dated too but that's neither here nor there, the games are almost 17 years old.
OT I would argue you are comparing whole franchises to two games with one sequel each (HL2 is episodic but still) the sheer scale of Zelda and Mario in popular culture would suggest contrary to your statement.

Well, this thread can be considered derailed. The pictures do nothing by themselves to talk about "full quality," and as these are different genres entirely, it's a textbook apples and oranges situation. If you're talking about graphics, fine, HL has better ones, I have no problem with saying that. I also have no problem saying that I don't care about graphics either. I might as well say Sonic the Hedgehog is of overall better quality than Sim City...how you'd quantify that I have no idea, but the statement makes about as much sense as the one a few posts above this one.

Now if you want to compare games of the same genre (Goldeneye/Quake II/HL1), that's a bit easier to stomach, but as Goldeneye is the only bunch of that trio I've played, I won't make any statements of comparative "overall quality." I have no problem saying that I consider Goldeneye in itself to be a very solid game with definate legacy though.

No im not talking about graphics. but rather full quality.

im not saying OOT is bad or anything. because for console point of view its great (althought for PC standard its complete crap) however half life was ahead of time. same as deus ex
Artstyle. A game with a colourful artstyle however much you hate it will always trump "realistic" graphics when looking back. Now think on what that means in your regards to your many biased comparisons you've made in threads on here.

Its a lost cause clearly, but how in the world is it good by console standards, but crap by PC standards? Just what are these standards anyway?
Additionally while I know you'll not answer anyway. I'll present you with Shin Megami Tensei II which may be a bit too old for you, and you've admitted you know nothing of RPGs (which doesn't stop your endless JRPG hate of course). However I find it relevant as its a console Dungeon crawler in a time when such things existed in good numbers on PC (you know those draw in your own map type of games). Tell me now what makes SMT2 crap by PC standards because its a console game.

too bad goldeneye was terrible even when it was released. in 1997 quack was also released and was much better. so in next year when Half life was released and blow it out of water.
I just had to sure so I googled Goldeneye as while I was sure it was an exclusive, I didn't want to say this next part without making sure. You are saying that because its a console game, boom your statement is instantly dismissed by everyone. See how without merit your words become when you show yourself to be unreasonably biased?

Why can you not support your favorite performer without endlessly badmouthing others? I get you want PC to get a push into the main event, but bad mouthing everyone else isn't going to propel PC to the top of the card.
That leads to management putting folk on job duty, not into main events.

Oh and I see you still have no idea what the word "legacy" means. I'll tell you the same everyone else has, quality is irrelevant. If all you can shoot back in response is "well in my opinion they are crap" than there is no more talking to be done as you clearly have nothing to actually put forward as a valid point.

This thread is madness. I remember playing half life when it first came out and was impressed with the physics but bored stupid by the game. Deus-ex was absolutely pants and only 1 of my pc friends ever liked it. My non-gamer friends all know who mario is (even my mother has heard of mario and luigi and she is nearly 80) and plenty of them have heard of zelda.

As ever, this thread is yet another attempt to justify pc over console in the never ending bullshit saga of pathetic kids trying to justify themselves as being special when they are all just parroting other people. Face it...if your male you have a cock and i'm male and i have a cock. It doesn't matter who has the biggest cock because when we play with our cocks we all derive our own personal pleasure. Maybe its time to stop trying to be a cock and start playing with your cock more...i'm not going to bother adding a female analogy because i think the ladies are probably a lot smarter than some of the comments that have been posted here! Yup, i'm sexist...i think women are better than men :p

But ... all you've done here is post a couple of screenshots, and said this proves one of these was "ahead of its time".
Twice in fact, in this post you've said HL was "ahead of its time", but you haven't actually explained how or why. Just telling us to "look closely".

But hey, if we're posting random screenshots of games, and using them as proof of what was "ahead of its time" without any actual reasoning other than opinion behind it, I can do that too!

HL2 and Halo2 were released the same year. Now look closely and you'll see how Halo2 was clearly ahead of its time.

I have to admit, I've never seen anyone able to shoehorn a 'consoles are crap' agenda into so many different posts as you have.

That takes some talent.

Mario influenced most of the 2D platformers that came out after it; Mario 64 introduced gamers to full 3D exploration. Zelda was the first open-world game, and its item-based progression shaped Metroid and that whole sub-genre. Half-life kickstarted narrative-driven action games, and broke the FPS level structure mould. Deus ex...I'm not actually sure if that influenced anything at all really.

when developers say they are making game more accessible it means in most cases they are going to dumbed down for wider audience. lot of old franchises are ruined. Splinter cell, Hitman, Thief, Rainbow six, even Deus Ex HR while better than IW but no where near original etc.

Seriously Diesel, stop shitposting. Most of your threads can be summarized by "I'm a PC elitist who's only played Stalker, Deus Ex and Half-Life. All other games suck because they're a) too accessible, b) too colourful and girly or c) have ironsights.
Now tell me why I am right"

Here we go again, your naked swipes are amusing at the very least.

Mario and Zelda are shall we say like Hulk Hogan, Half-Life and Dues Ex are more like AJ Styles. Well known among a certain audience, but relatively unknown among the rest.
Proclaiming them as more important is amusing at best. It'd be like if I said Indie star #354 was bigger than Cena or something, complete hogwash.
Pff please, Cena's only what like 6'3, 250 pounds?

Also I like the wrestling analogies, not too many fans on the Escapist :(

OT: Nintendo and the NES practically saved videogaming with titles like Mario and Zelda. No Mario and Zelda, very likely that theres no Half Life or Deus Ex. For many Nintendo and its properties IS videogames, theres absolutely no argument about this

Can we please get a mod in here, OP's been making constant flame baiting threads for weeks now and nothing has been done about it, hardly a warning or anything and yet I'm sure there's a rule against making threads to deliberately fan flames.

I do not agree with Diesel at all. I dont believe his way of making fun of ENTIRE GENRES (JRPGs) is valid. It is not.
I dont like his elitism. Despite coming from Eastern Europe where real gaming in my country started with Tetris... and right after that DOOM and WOlfenstein and Quake and Starcraft and Warcraft. Despite BELIEVING that PC gaming is COMPLETELY superior in EVERY way to consoles (bar ease of use, a very small lead for consoles there) and believing gaming would be MUCH better off if consoles dies out slowly over the next 2-3 years. But still I disagree with attacking actual games or genres. That is... not something any gamer should do.

However, the difference between STALKER and Bayonetta makes them impossible to compare. Truth is, NOTHING on this planet of gaming can be directly compared with STALKER. Your comparison there is void, subjective... and well... strange.
I merely said that Bayonetta requires more skill to play. I'm betting Bayonetta has more diverse weapons & equipment that change gameplay vs STALKER as well. Diesel was basically saying STALKER has more depth and PC games inherently have more depth + the graphics obviously. The graphics argument is funny because PC's best games usually aren't that great graphically like Deus Ex for example. Better graphics only makes a game very marginally better anyways, plus the best looking games cost a good deal to develop thus they are usually aimed at a larger audience to sell more and make a profit, thus the games won't have the deepest mechanics.

Most games are exactly the same on PC vs console in gameplay so I don't get the point in the PC being so awesome unless you're a graphics whore. Console controllers are inherently better for 3rd-person games as well. Yeah, I know you can use console controllers on a PC, but it's just more hoops to jump through as I had to download some Japanese DualShock3 drivers to use my PS3 controller on my PC years ago. The 1st-person perspective lacks the depth of 3rd-person, you can't run forward while looking behind you for example, something I can do in real life I can't do in 1st-person games. You also have no peripheral vision in 1st-person games either, and I'm not setting up 3 monitors for peripheral vision either. Most 1st-person games are 1st-person because the camera is so much easier to code vs a 3rd-person camera. It's funny that Diesel is arguing gameplay depth while using 1st-person games as his examples because I can name so many games (both PC and console) that have more depth than what games he listed. Metal Gear Online was a shooter on PS3 that required so much more skill to play than most PC shooters as you needed headshots to kill, your aiming skill had to be top-notch (no camping in a corner and spraying for your kills). I could really only see the super fast paced arena PC shooters being the only PC shooters that would require more skill than MGO.
