One of my Professor's told a story today about a man. He lived in a very small community and was very well known and connected. He was 57 years old. One day riding his bike to the single restaurante in the town to eat lunch, somewhere along the way, no one is quite sure where, he completely lost all memory of who he was, where he was, and what he was doing. He still did, however, have common sense and some knowledge because he stopped at the nearest store and called an ambulance. The doctors are unable to find anything wrong with his brain and as far as they can tell did not fall or suffer any kind of medical accident to make him lose his identity, he just did.
Anyway, it brings up an interesting question. Is our Identity, who we are, what we are, how we think of ourselves in our minds just constructs that we have created for the sake of existing like software that can be just as easily errased or is it actually hardwired into us through years of mental conditioning and is an essential part of how our brain works. Or am I speaking incoherent bable and there is a whole plethora of other choices.
What do you guys think?
