Please join me in congratulating the Visceral Studios teams at Redwood Shores, Montreal, Melbourne and Shanghai for creating an unparalleled experience in Dead Space 2. The game we created in 2008 was recognized by critics as iconic - what we didn't expect is that the team at Visceral would leapfrog that first effort with a bigger, better, and much, much scarier second game that has secured Dead Space as a bona fide franchise. Dead Space 2 launches with a 91 Metacritic - higher than DS1. The New York Times has stamped it as the first big blockbuster of 2011.

Dead Space 2 is a game our entire company can be proud of. The team at Visceral Studios faced down adversity and never got sucked into petty competition. Their answer was simple - they just made a better game. Congratulations!

Frank
Holy fuck! Did they just inadvertently announce more Dead Space games?
Well there are three already.
Dead Space, Dead Space: Extraction, Dead Space: That Visual Comic/Novel Thing with Puzzles in It, Dead Space 2,

...yeah Dead Space is already franchise... it's called EVENT HORIZON.

I could be wrong but maybe the statement is being over analysed?

I remember when news sections reported facts.

I would like it way more if Isaac didn't have a voice, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm about to finish Dead Space 2, I'm right at the end (wait, why the fuck am I posting? I'm gonna go finish that) and it really is much better, even though the original was awesome
Is it better to finish the 1st one? Does it benefit the story?

I have to agree, so far I've been pleased with DS2. Gameplay is silky smooth and they provided some much needed tutorials neatly sewn into the levels at the beginning (I completely forgot the controls so that was a big help). Opening scene was freaky though. :p

I come to the Escapist because it is the most professionnal site about gaming in my opinion, more than gamasutra, more than develop. This kind of article doesn't contribute to that perception.

You can manage without playing the first one, because they did something ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT with Dead Space 2.

When you select campaign, there is an option called "Previously on Dead Space" that plays a concise 5 minute video that lets you know everything you need to know from the first game.

While it might benefit you a little to play the first game, and you probably should at some point just because it's an awesome game, it's not like Mass Effect one and Mass Effect two. You should definitely understand everything that's going on as long as you watch that video.
