Is it a good or bad thing that cheat codes do not really have a role in modern gaming?

I think it's a bad thing, because I miss having a reason to use them. Today you barely notice the lack of cheat codes because you don't even need them, most games are so easy or self-explanatory.

Still, I guess you could consider today's glitches as cheat codes, in which case I think they can go suck it for the most part. All they do is give people a reason to complain at each other in online sessions.

I miss the stupid, Ratchet and Clank style ones, which were given as rewards and weren't 'cheats' in the traditional sense.

Apart from that, most games nowadays are designed to be beaten, so it doesn't make any difference to me.

Most of the games I that I own have cheats in them, or at least have console commands. Maybe it's more of a PC thing.
I use god mode cheats a fair bit, I find it irritating having to repeat bits that you've been through already because you died. Getting better weapons helps when it takes too long to kill enemies and you just want to get on to see what happens next. It depends on the game though, most of them are so easy that dying is a rarity.

Admittedly, some of them can be a lot of fun. I do kind of miss codes, particularly ones that don't really affect gameplay (the 'shits and giggles' codes). Particularly on the PC, developers may as well throw some of these in, since it's easy enough to make gameplay changing cheats on the PC with or without codes, and it gives the developers a chance to screw around if they have any free time (which may be a key reason there aren't many).

Most of the time, cheat codes would overpower your character and make the game boring. You'd have that moment of awesome dominance, but then it would lose its appeal.

It's a bad thing for me. I needs mah cheats to customise my character in games where they don't want you to.

I miss cheat codes. I mean that way you didn't need to finish X ammount of missions flawlessly or Y amount of dead guys with headshots only to get some silly hat for the game. I mean I love doing the Stormtrooper cheat for TFU I don't want to unlock it, I just want to put in a hidden code if I want to, or ignore it if I don't

I am glad. That definitely shows that people cant just use cheats to get through a game anymore.

gee i think the lack of cheats sucks , i use codes after first play though and it adds replay to the game ,
i hate going to game help sites for codes and only get achievement tips
as for those against cheats you have a good point , i never cheat in online play but i do use cheats just for fun after first play though
gta san andreas had the best cheats , even saints row 2 does , gta 4 had some but needed more , hopefully the next gta will bring more cheats

I don't mind cheat codes, but if it's invulnerability then that gets my seal of no! As for ones that give you all levels, or unlock a certain mode then I'm find with those, even more so if its like banjo-Kazooie's cheats that made you with a giant head or something random.

When i say cheat codes I dont mean the kind of code that allows you to unlock every level before you have even started, I mean the sorts of codes that enhanced the game or gave it a breath of fresh air.
well now that depends, are you refering to the type of codes featured in the Legend of Zelda: Oracles games, or do you mean like DOOM style cheats where you go godmode and pretty much blow the shit outta everything that moves?

Whenever I visit cheatbook.de, I find that many games do still have cheats.

Not being able to cheat in a single player game is seriously lame. You have nothing to prove to anyone by not cheating because you're playing alone, you're not in a multiplayer where your cheating lessens the experience for others. Sometimes Shost Mode lets you walk through objects & leave the playable area. It's cool to look at.

In RPGs, my favorite cheat is the one that produces items. Saved my ass whenever I accidently sell a quest item.

I miss cheats. They made all sorts of fun things possible, like killing Egyptians with a Canadian bear. They were fun. Great for screwing around in games with. Or was i the only one who shot people in the balls when they had DK mode on in Goldeneye.
