I just don't line many mainstream games. Mairo, Kirby, LoZ, Sonic, I'm just not intrested in them. Granted, the absolute first game I picked up was Pokemon Red for the Gameboy Color and I have played through many RPGs (Okami, Glory of Heracles, and Golden Sun to name just a few). I HAVE tried to play all of the games I've mentioned, but besides the Mario RPGs for the GBA and the DS I've never liked any of them for various reasons. So, I've been wondering this: Should Nintendo and Sonic Team bench them for a while to redefine their images to appeal to those who DIDN'T grow up on them?

I don't really see why they should. There's certainly plenty of gamers who believe Nintendo's core franchises could do with some freshening up or doing away with entirely, but it seems as thought they're vastly outweighed by the gamers who are fine with things just the way they are.

Personally, I haven't got strong feelings one way or the other because I just play games for fun. I think I'd enjoy a "grim and gritty" revamped Mario just as much as I would, say, Super Mario Galaxy 3, because they both sound like fun games.

There hasn't been a Zelda game on home consoles since 2006. How dare you suggest they bench it. I'm chomping at the bit for a new one.

Most of their major titles have a single game in a console life. So I wouldn't say they are overplayed, however the nostalgia of it all seems to wear with each time they announce a new one.

I'm wondering if OP has seen the latest South Park episode.
When you play, do you see balls of shit flying out of Mario's hands instead of fireballs?
If so, then you might just be "turning into a cynical asshole."

... no offense.

I didn't grow up on Nintendo games and I still love the new games to bits. I grew up on PS1 games like Spyro and Crash :3

I think they should try to innovate with their games a lot more but I think Nintendo are already recognising this demand. I mean Pokemon games have been pretty much the same for so long, and then suddenly Black&White come along and make a ton of changes. And we're seeing them try reintroduce some new franchises too like Kid Icarus.

Oh and we've had the Mario Galaxy series too, that introduced a ton of new stuff to the 3D Mario games. The sequel didn't add a great deal but it did polish the hell out of the first game and was still worth the buy.

Nintendo? No. They can still build a new house out of gold with almost every game they release from their main games.

Sega, though? Oh ho ho ho, YES.

I agree about SEGA. As much as I love Sonic games I'd like them to take a Zelda approach and wait a good few (EDIT: four even!) years before releasing a new one. Plus it'd give them a chance to rediscover titles like Streets of Rage, Shenmue and Jet Set Radio. Maybe even release a decent successor to NiGHTS.

I think pretty much everyone has grown up with Mario, whether it be Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario Sunshine

I think that companies should keep their old favorites but never rely on them over new ideas. I love Nintendo but I do hate that they haven't put out a first-party original IP in quite a long time.
don't bench the classics but never forget to making something new.

Christ, has it been that long?

Nintendo's series do work the nostalgia factor pretty fiercely, but they are still pretty good games. I think Nintendo also tries to appeal to people who haven't grown up with them. They give you a game and ask you to try it out and tries to include you in the fanbase.

So, yes, it's OK if you're not interested. I feel this way about many other games (Starcraft, for example). But Nintendo still tries to get you involved, regardless of whether you came up with it or not.

I don't know about Nintendo benching their work. Sonic Team should just give up and forget their heartache because their games are almost universally hated or pitied.

I think what Mario could use is a few games that either reboot his image or take the characters in completely ridiculous directions.

For example: A Mario game that's a third person shooter with an over the top cop story that involves two Brothers, a Girl and an Evil King Turtle at the top of a mushroom-based drug empire.

Or how about a Mario game that is done in a film noire style? Or a Mario game that is extremely reminiscent of Casablanca?

Honestly, the possibilities are both endless and interesting.

The power-ups would take on cool new twists.

-The Fire Flower becomes The Cigarette

-The Power-Up Mushroom becomes Having Sex With Grace Kelly

-The Extra Life Mushroom becomes Seven Glasses of Straight Bourbon
