Is it just me?

...or does handheld gaming just seem less relevant lately? In the the first five years of the last decade handheld gaming really started growing. But a few years after the DS came out, there seemed to be a lot less attention on handhelds. Yeah the iPhone is doing some neat stuff and is probably going to become a moderately successful gaming platform, but it just seems like not as many people really care.

Any one else agree, or am I just ignorant? Go, frolic and discuss.

Maybe it has to do with age? When I was a kid, everyone needed a Gameboy to be cool and not a console. Now we have moved on, but maybe kids these days care more about handhelds than consoles as well?

It isn't covered as much as it used to be, it seems. I remember when people were going apeshit over Advance Wars. There hasn't been a game on handhelds with a ton of hype for a long time now.

The DS is founded on a mostly casual market, PSP is trying to aim for that market.

Of course handheld gaming is being talked about less.

Honestly, handheld gaming sorta dropped out of my concern after I got out of high school and bought a nice laptop. But that's just me.

Here's a little exercise you can do.

Get on a bus, train, any form of public transport. Now take note of how many people are playing games on their iPhone/iPod Touch/PSP/DS.

Nah, it's just you. The only difference is that the Handhelds have games that don't attract people. Let's say this and yes i know this is a bad example, would you rather play avatar on a ds or rather on a console where the world comes to life. I like to play on a ds but the last game i played was assasin's Creed II : Discovery. Handheld gaming isn't dead, but with console games, like mass effect 2 and bioshock 2 the attention goes to console rather than handhelds.

The DS has sold over 125 million units, the PSP has just under half of that.

As a comparison, the Wii has sold 69 million, the 360 sold 39 million and the PS3 33.5 million.

So...no, handheld isn't less relevant.

Meh i remember when the gameboy advanced came out, it was big but i think now that there are less real games for the hand helds and more casual games but meh, im gonna be getting a psp soonish but yeah.
