It's never too late to join TF2 but do it fast, before it turns into this.
I fail to see the problem with The Sims combined with an FPS.

Well i started playing a few months ago, and it is not too late to join us in the glorious revolution of hat based combat simulators.
Now on to the sensible part of this post, well its fun, and there is a suprisingly low number of hater's out. The regular releases also help keep the game fresh.

I got into the game last month, and although it's difficult to stay alive at first you can improve your game experience simply by browsing the New User Forum. Some really great stuff in there :)

I have TF2 for PC and have yet to play it. Looked at the server list and had no idea what the community was like online. Was kinda afraid to jump into any game in fear of being insta-banned for being new.

And is the hat thing really that bad? Could someone explain please?
Customisation at a price. Some people love it, some people hate it. Both still play the game.

I got it during the Steam Sale for $5. So far I'm finding it interesting. I haven't done multiplayer yet because I want to get used to the maps and gameplay first because it's a gametype I'm not as familiar with (MMOFPS, essentially). It doesn't have the same appeal that I got in Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 and I had WAY more fun with Arkham Asylum (which I also got at the Steam Sale). But that doesn't mean it's a terrible purchase.

As for the in-game items. I have no idea what the fuck those are about yet. But they seem expensive and why would I want to pay extra money for an in-game item (A SINGLE ITEM) when it may or may-not have added benefits to my gameplay? I don't know enough about em to deal with it.

In short... I guess get it if you want. And since we'd both be newbies at it, look my up on steam and we can play a round or two.
I'll give a short explanation with regards to the store (that's probably been repeated several times before I got here, but still)...

There's no real need to buy the weapons. You'll be handed items every so often as you play (along with a set of 3 of them for each class unlockable through achievements), along with a crafting and in-game trading system to further item collection, so with patience you'll be able to experience everything without needing to pay money. Hats are purely cosmetic (with the exception of set hats, which have an effect with the whole of a set), but somewhat rare, but again can be gained through trading or crafting (though only set hats have specific crafting blueprints).

Occasionally, a box will drop which will contain one of a list of items, which require a key from the store to open. The only possible content of the box that isn't available through item drops or crafting are the Unusual hats, which have one of several effects on them (and some of which, incidentally, make your head a nice, shiny target for Snipers). If you want to try for one, buy a key or see if you can trade for one, but otherwise trade the crate or just delete it. It's up to you.

...That was somewhat longer than intended... So yes - no real need to use the store at all. Now, there's a couple of Escapist servers in different parts of the world, I believe - to the battlefield with you.

EDIT: (sees the video above and can't help but paraphrase...)
On second thoughts, let us not go to the Escapist server. It is a silly place. :p

Ugh, I hate it when people deride TF2 for being a "Pay to win" game, that's just an idiotic claim for various reasons:

-You don't have to pay for the items, you get them randomly. New users get a crap-ton of items the first few days so even if you don't get the ones you want you can go to a trading server and get good stuff.

-All of the new weapons and loadouts are sidegrades not upgrades, every single one of them has a downside and an advantage compared to the stock weaponry.

-Most of the new items suck. Only a handful are worth the drawbacks they carry.

OP: Never too late to get into TF2, I just got it last year (Though I did play for a year or so on the PS3 before that). :3

And it is a very good community, I help out newbies all the time, I give them free items and strategic advice so they can be credit to team.

I just picked up TF2 about a month and a half ago and have been really enjoying it. I don't drop the crazy amount of time into it that a lot of people do, but I've gotten pretty comfortable with all of the classes(except for the spy, damnit I can't seem to make it work and I know they can because they murder me). There really are a lot of fairly closed knit servers out there, but you can generally tell whether one is focused on a clan or getting new people to join and I've managed to find a handful that seem to have pretty good players on them and fairly steady populations.

It really is a good game, well balanced with just enough humor and strategy to it that it makes for a great shooter.

TF2 has changed but only because it needs some new...blood...and tears...of joy :D

I never cared for the hats and people who focus on getting them since they're just easier to kill. The new weapons invent new ways for people to die which is always fun. Don't listen to people who say it's now about hats or the game is ruined.

I can understand all the complaints about it changing for the worse and yes people are way too obsessed with hats (but easier to take down vs. people who are not) but all the new weapon additions make it exciting again. In fact, I wait a few days or a week to start playing with the new stuff because I know most people are just either complaining or getting used to the new stuff, i.e. "Wow this new weapon is ruining the game" - says clan dude who keeps getting killed by an entire team trying out a new gun. In the past, with all the player updates, this was the case, and people never seemed to remember that within a week or two after the content update "settled", it would still be entertaining as hell + new stuff.

O and here is a nice tip: Most if not all people will complain about the weapons they can't use AND/OR keep getting killed by!

TF2 was and still is the best shooter game that I've ever played and as long as Valve manages to keep all the new weapons balanced and stops listening to the community that voices complaints en masse to spite people who learned how to use them, i.e. they who hate spies and can't use the knife therefore wanting the knife to be "nerfed, the game will be fine for years.

As long as im still backstabbing and shotgunning like it was vanilla TF2 all over again (maybe not since they made the backstab chaining faster a year later :D), then im satisfied.

Anyone that says the unlockable items are better than the normal weapons are questionable of actually playing the game. The unlockables are merely sidegrades to their counterparts, while the original weapons are good enough to do what they usually do. The hats are just cosmetic items, and it appears people cannot seem to play a game where people have something they don't, even though it has no relevance on gameplay. If the concept of meaningless hats bothers you that much, you can just play more for the drop system to give you something.

I assume you know about the item shop right?
Dude... you don't need to pay to get the items. Paying just gets you more of them, faster.

Nah its not too late to get into, despite its changes, which hurt its older community a bit, its still a great game to play for some hectic FPS fun.

Personally i never got too into it so i still enjoy a game every now and then.

Don't listen to this guy. Base items are better then any you can unlock for free.

You don't pay to win. You just pay to have fun...quicker.
Thank you for proving my point listen to this guy, if you dont pay you will get owned untill you can unlock items that dont allow you to get head shoted or insta killed

trust me dont play this valve is testing if they can get away with this junk and your going to let them

I Disagree with that. Sure its harder to start the game than ever but its not like you have to buy the items and the drop rate is massive. An hours play a day normally squares you an item. Plus with trading and crafting your there in no time. Just don't care about hats. But then... you always start caring about hats! LMAO!

It is still great fun, but Valve needs to get rid of the set bonuses that come from specific hat and loadout combinations.

It's not too late at all. I got it only a few weeks ago and I'm having a ton of fun with it. The learning curve may be a bit steeper than before now that there are so many experienced players, but it's still awesome.

Here you go
http://www.teamfortress.com/mannconomy/item_sets/

If you look at the set perks you will see they are very broken
Oh ya the hats give no stats alone but when mixed with a set they can give +20% damage or you cannot be killed by head shots

And your a fat lair when you say the drop rate is massive it takes a month for a person to get a hat(random hat) and that's if they're lucky

Ya if you get into this game it cannot be played without paying extra
hey i love valve as much as the next guy but when they do evil i will point it out

I wish, I bought TF2 for Christmas and I only have 5 non-promotional items from 17 hours of play.

I had stopped playing TF2 for quite some time, and I went back yesterday and a lot has changed. This isn't bad seeing as it kept my attention and has drawn me back to collect more items, get better weapons, etc. It's a load of fun to play.
