You're a gamer, right?
If so: Get a PS2.

If you're not a gamer, or one of those 'OMG AVATAR IZ TEH BUST BECUZ OF TEH GRAFIX!1!1'...
Well, first off...Eww!
And, well, YES...get a damn PS2.

I'm actually unsure, a lot of the games I would recommend are or are going to be in HD collections, or will probably be on the PSN store for PS3 if you have one.

The answer should be obvious by now, but absolutely, buy yourself a PS2, you won't be disappointed. The PS2 has one of, if not the biggest library in console history. There's something for everyone, and in most cases more than just something, a lot of things. It's also pretty cheap to get into. Not only is the hardware cheap, but the software is too -- at least, aside from a couple of semi-rare gems with prices driven up by E-bay scalpers. *grumble*ZoE2isnotworth$200youassholes*grumble*

Absolutely! You get the best console ever made dirt cheap these days, and its entire game catalogue is pretty much in the 10 Euro range.

Not just that, but you'll likely still have it working in a decade. My launch PS2 still works fine, with original controller and memory card.

Ehh don't worry so much Owyn, they are making an HD collection for ZOE.
Oh, I know. But unless it drives the prices down for the originals (and if FFVII is any indication, it won't), it won't help me, because I don't have a PS3 :(

You don't own a 360?

The HD collection is for both PS3 and 360.
Did not know that, but no. I went with a PC this gen, because the consoles were /way/ too expensive. Hopefully that new slim PS3 that's being rumored is real and it'll get another price drop. I might finally get one then and catch up on console exclusives.

Everyone above me has already covered most of the bases, but I would say yes as well. Mind you, this is coming from somebody who grew up with a PS1 and a PS2, so that made up the bulk of my gaming experience. There is a VERY large library of games with a multitude of genres to choose from, and it would be (relatively) cheap to pick up, alongside some games. Plus, backwards compatibility; can't beat that!

Recently I've been thinking about picking up a PS2, I was a GameCube kid that generation so I missed out on it entirely. They aren't terribly expensive but I haven't quite been able to justify it to myself yet. Most of the things I can think of are either also on systems I already own but easier to find for PS2, or have already been ported to it's younger brother.

And so I bring the issue to you, Escapist. Are there enough good games buried in the library to make it worth buying? Are they titles I can't easily find somewhere else? Will anyone even respond to this at all? Will Batman and the Boy Wonder make it out alive? Tune in at some indeterminate point in the future to find out, same game time, same game forum!

(Oh, and I also picked up a PS1 not too long ago, if any one has any recommendations for that too that'd be great.)
I was a Gamecube kid too, high-five!

lol in any event the PS2's game library was MASSIVE! and if you're looking to game for less I'd say there's never been a better time to pick one up. the PS2 had more games than anything else (I think) so odds are you'll find a few gems that passed you by that didn't make it to an HD re-release

Depending on what games you want, I would just run a PS2 emulator. The only games I've had an issue with on the emulator were Metal Gear Solid games because some of the shoot controls rely on pressure sensitivity with the buttons.

I would say use an emulator if you can, if not... YUS BECAUSE YOU MUST JOIN THE PS2 MASTER RACE.
but really, go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I'll just say that the ps2 was the leading console for about 7 years, so that 7 years worth of what were at the time (and still are today for some) the greatest games ever made.

If you don't mind that some games has grown older less gracefully than others, yes, it is totally worthy. The library size of that thing is crazy... CRAAAAAAAZY.

basically this, the amount of games the ps2 has that are just fucking amazing is ridiculous, most of my favorite story/adventureish type games are all from ps2, including a fucking plethora of rpg's from western and japan alike.

between amazon/ebay/local game shops, you can find most games dirt cheap too. last time i picked up KH 1 and 2, it was like 20 bucks for the both of them total.
