Is it worth getting a Ps3 at this point?

I really want to get a Playstation 3 to play all the awesome exclusives, but with the Ps4 coming out soon, I'm not sure if it's even worth it. What do you guys think?

The PS4 isn't backwards compatible, so if you want PS3 exclusives you have to get a PS3. As for if it's worth it, how many exclusives do you want? Is it enough to justify the price of the console? Besides you can always get a PS3 now and hold off getting a PS4 until it's cheaper and has a bigger library.

Definitely. The PS4 as TehCookie said, isn't backwards compatible since it's completely different from any other Playstation model there is.
Plus you could snag one of the old models of the PS3 that has backwards compatibility with the PS2 and then you're golden. Sure those models are a bit fatter and only have 60 GB, but you can upgrade the PS3's HDD with a larger size since the PS3 use a 2.5" laptop hard drive.

Plus, the PS3 has a nice large library on it so you're set for a while until the PS4 drops in price if you don't wanna pay 400 USD for it.

I've always wanted to play God of War, Infamous, Uncharted, Heavy Rain. I've never played any of them and I hear nothing but good things.

I think you should go for it. I already have a PS3, but if I didn't and I was in your shoes, I would buy a PS3 now and a PS4 much later when it comes down in price. Like the others have said it isn't going to be backwards compatible and PS3 is awesome. I probably won't be buying a PS4 till 2015.

So I say it is very much worth it.

When it comes to Infamous, the second one is a major improvement from the first one when it comes to the characters. Also, add in the Ratchet and Clank Future series (Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty, and A Crack in Time) because those were some good games.

Heck it's funny because with how A Crack in Time is it still looks like one of the most beautiful PS3 games, and it came out in 2009. XD

Also, Sly 4 is pretty good and the Disgaea series is a lot of fun if you like SRPGs.

Why wouldn't it be? It's not like all of PS3's games are going to disappear once PS4 comes out. If anything the purchase will be even more worth it, since PS3 products will probably go down in price after the PS4 release.

I get a lot of mileage out of mine, so I'm probably biased, but I'd say yes it's certainly worth it.

Definitely. I only got mine approx 6 months ago. My logic is that PS3s are now cheaper than ever, and the system now has a massive library of titles and exclusives collected over the years, making it ideal for me to go back and play all those exclusives I never got a chance to during its regular life cycle. I'd practically say PS3 is in it's prime right now. It has the most to offer, and is now more accessible than ever.

Okay maybe that sounds like an ad, but I switched my 360 for a PS3 and couldn't have been happier ever since.

Why not? I'd say the twilight of a generation is often the best time to pick up a system.

The console and games will for the most part be cheaper to pick up, either new or secondhand[footnote]certain exceptions not withstanding, like Xenoblade Saga.[/footnote]. All of the best, most worthwhile games will have been released. And with the honeymoon being over and things having settled down, I find it's easier to determine and cherry pick those games.

Sure, if you're big on multiplayer, then I wouldn't, since most of the communities will have died. But that's not that big an issue since most PS3 exclusives are single-player only or at the very least have a solid sp campaign.

Honestly you're much better off getting a PS3 and enjoying all the games it has to offer now. It'll be cheaper for you and once you've finally had your fill of the games it has to offer, you can then get one of the next gen systems which will then be cheaper and have more games.

In the times we have right now with the gaming industry, it's smarter to prioritize your wallet over having the latest hardware.

The only exception might be if you're someone that's really big on multiplayer games, specifically online play.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes yes yes yes yes.

If you're only interested in actual PS3 games (when it comes to physical copies) you can get a Slim or Super Slim for a pretty good price.

On top of this, the PS3 has a great library of exclusives (including some fuckin' great HD collections if you missed out on the PS2).

Highly recommended console from me.

As someone who bought a ps3 when it was $500 and had hardly any games, I can confidently say it is more worthwhile than ever!

The ps4 will most likely be my system of choice next gen, but I'm still going to wait until it gets a few games that interest me.

Yes, I think so.

However, at this point I'd suggest waiting until the next gen consoles come out, then picking up a PS3 if you still want one. Should be cheap as chips.

I'd imagine all of those are going to get PS4 store ports for them. I would defintly expect God of War and Infamous to get them atleast. If you're a patient man, (or gal, though I feel pretty confident with man. This totally isn't filler, shut up you) you could wait till the PS4 comes out for around a month, wait for a bunch of PS3's to hit the pre used market, and buy them dirt cheap, and maybe also see if the PS4 is getting the ports you want.

Why wait for new consoles? console launches just mean you have a very minimal library of crappy rushed games to pick from and you always get the console in its most shoddy incarnation. If you buy a ps3 now you have the entire library to enjoy till the ps4 becomes worthwhile.

Well I'm definitely getting one soon. It's affordable now, there are plenty of games I want to play on it, and I'm in no rush to get a next gen console (because of the price, the lack of games that are interesting, and to see if there are problems with the first batch).

I'm actually in a similar position, there are plenty of games that I'd say warrant the price, but I'm just not confident in Sony's PS3. The PSN hacking started it, but I know a guy who had quite a complicated bugged hard-drive situation and that story is incredibly worrying. The way I've rationalized my choice of not buying is: I already have a 360 and all of the good multi-platform games I'll want, even if I don't get a PS3 there will be other games on other platforms I can buy and enjoy just as much, plus I can just mooch off other people if the situation presents itself. Considering how you created a forum thread for support on your purchase, though. I'd suggest looking for a good deal and buying one, unless the choice you've already decided is to pass on the PS3 of course.

I don't know, won't these things be like pretty darn expensive now, having quickly become collectors items and all?

And the backwards compatability wasn't even that great to begin with. Sure, some games like God of War 2 and Shadow of the Colossus look great, but others like MGS3 and Prince of Persia suffer from vertically squased screens. And the frame rate when playing Ratchet and Clank 3 goes into the single digits.

OT: Maybe wait till the PS4 is released - For all you know Sony could be planning a price drop for the PS3 to keep the system attractive in the face of the next generation.

I'd probably wait until after the PS4 has been released. Could bring down the prices even more, as mentioned above.
Definetly feel it's worth getting since the PS4 isn't backwards compatible and the exclusives are amazingly awesome. I've loved mine for four years and it's still going strong, even if it's mainly a Netflix machine now since I went back to PC gaming.

Be careful though. I got a fair bit over a hundred games due to finding a site that sells games cheap and trophy addiction. So much money lost. ;_;

Edit: Did some searching on compability to make sure and found that they'll offer a service, like they have now on the PS3, so you can buy PS3 games online and play them on the PS4.
Pretty sure their exclusives will be the first on the market, so perhaps it's a better idea to go PS4 and get the exclusives there...

Will no doubt be way cheaper to get them for the PS3, though the console will still be quite pricey.
