Is it worth getting a PS3?

I own both a PS3 and a 360, and I use my PS3 much, much, MUCH more. It's worth it, for all the reasons other people have listed.

Depends. Do you have money to burn and want to play the PS3 exclusives? If so, then yes. If not, then no, stick to the 360.

So, my question is simple. Is it worth buying a PS3? I have an Xbox 360 already and I am not very keen on playing pc games. I like all sorts of games, so I was wondering if it was worth spending the extra money on the PS3 or if I should stick to the 360 and continue buying games for that.
Absolutely. I have a 360 now and while there are a few games I'm interested in for the 360 that are exclusive, I will be buying a PS3 (I'll probably wait for a move bundle to come out though).

Rather than say why you should get one I'll say why I'll be getting one and you can see if it applies to you.

#1 - Controls. The 360 controller works for some games, and for others it's awful. Unfortunately without a hardware mod there's no option for tilt controls, and there are no 3rd party controllers with symmetrical analog sticks.

#2 - Hardware quality. Even at its best the 360 has a 4% failure rate, and at its worst a 40% failure rate. Eventually it's going to break, that makes me less inclined to get any cross platform games for the 360. Given it has a BluRay player, 8 years from now the PS3 will still work and even if you don't play games on it anymore it'll still work as a home entertainment system.

#3 - PSN. I like playing online occasionally, but not enough to justify paying anything for the privilege. With a PS3 you can ditch the cost of an Xbox Live Gold membership (assuming you have one), and over a few years, likely as long as your 360 survives before it croaks, you'll recoup the cost of the PS3 in Gold membership savings.

#4 - User created content. Games like Little Big Planet simply aren't possible on the 360 due to MS's restrictions on user created content.

#5 - Breadth of games. Related to #4, the PS3 has game types the 360 simply doesn't have. There's nothing like Echochrome or Flower or Little Big Planet on the 360, and even Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn't have a real analogue (Splinter Cell is a pale imitation).

The 360 is really an all or nothing type console. Either you play online games exclusively to justify an Xbox Live Gold membership, or not at all. The PS3 really does everything, you can not play games for a couple months but still use it for general entertainment purposes, and you won't be eating a monthly or yearly subscription fee for when you're not playing anything.

In almost any situation I'd say the PS3 is the best buy this generation, although the 360 does have a few good parts (mainly low price on sales for the Arcade, and the VGA HD cable which allows you to make use of a monitor you already have rather than buying an HDTV, which given the cost of a good HDTV can have you saving $300-$700 over a PS3.

If you have the extra cash laying around there really isn't any reason not to.
A perfect answer. If you got the cash go get it. The exclusive are great, online is free and the Blu-ray player is an awesome bonus.
That's the thing, I don't have the money for one at the minute but was planning to save up, but didn't know if it was worth it or whether I should spend that money on 360 games instead
If you're paying for a Gold Membership right now, stop paying for it and save up with that (and other means, ie not buying 360 games). You're going to be hurting when (not if) your 360 breaks and you have a bunch of games for it. In the long run you'll save money, and since the PS3 will last so long, you'll still have something to play 8 years down the road when you're in a pinch again.

Go ahead and spring for a PS3. If you just enjoy playing good games and are not a fanboy, a PS3 is more than worth it. It has some great games and a few great PSN games to download. And if you don't want to game on the PC might as well spring for another console to open up your options a bit.

It's kinda funny- if this thread had been posted on any other forum, there'd be a massive fan boy flame war by now.

I'd say so, games like Valkyria Chronicles, InFamous, LittleBigPlanet, and Uncharted are things I just can't pass up. Plus, not that there's much wrong with the 360, but the reliability is a issue for me.

Also, the PS3 just seems to do more, what with wireless connectivity to your PC, being able to stream movies directly from Vuze or just from your documents, and Blu-Ray compatability.

Yes, get a PS3. In my view it has far better games than the Xbox. Then again it is my opinion. An opinion. OPINION.
Games I have for my PS3...
InFamous
Uncharted Series
Metal Gear Solid 4
Killzone 2
God of War III
Ratchet&Clank Future Series
Heavy Rain
The rest are third party games that are not exclusives.
Opinions are not tolerated here!
Only joking.

OT: If you really want a PS3, then get one. Just see if it has games you are interested in. I like my PS3.

It really comes down to the exclusives. There are some pretty awesome PS3 games, but I'm not entirely sure it was worth it for me personally. I had a 360 for like 3 years before my PS3 and in general, I like the 360 better. Graphics might not be quite as pretty, but for some reason even the relatively small extension on load times on the PS3 makes me really impatient. Also, I had an Xbox last gen but never any PS's, so I prefer the 360's controller to the PS3's. Those are both really minor complaints, but they mean I almost always buy cross-platform games for my 360 instead of my PS3. So I guess my advice is that if you find yourself at some point with a lot of disposable income, go for it. If not, I probably wouldn't save up for it unless there are exclusives that you would die without playing.

I think over the next year will be the absolute best time there is to buy a ps3, the price is nice and low, all the older quality games like mgs4 and uncharted 1 are bargain bin prices while newer ones like god of war have dropped too.

Personally I own a 360, it is my main gaming platform and it will remain that way until the next generation. That being said, I am planning on buying a ps3. However the 360 stays in my room on my lovely 22inch hd tv with my laptop. When I buy a ps3 its going in the family room for blu ray movies and stuff only being taken back into my room for some serious exclusive gaming. I am only buying it because I can afford the privilege of experiencing both.

I play games on the PS3 and the PC mainly, and though I'm generally happy with the PS3 and would recommend it to someone buying a new console who doesn't have one, I say if you are happy with the 360, stick with that.

The PS3 exclusives mostly just show off the graphical capabilities of the PS3. They are not great games for the most part. InFamous is the only exclusive that makes me happy I have the PS3. The rest of them I could take or leave.

Except for InFamous, the games I have truly enjoyed are multiplatform and probably were first designed for the 360 and then ported over to the PS3.

Personally, I have not found my PS3 to be a worthy investment. I own a 360 and a very respectable gaming PC along with a DS, PSP and iPhone so I can play most any game that I care about already. Still, eventually there were enough pieces of exclusive software that I made the plunge. All in all, after more than a year's ownership, I have purchased and played a handful of games: Uncharted 1 and 2, Little Big Planet, inFamous, Killzone 2 and God of War 3. My total time playing those games is likely right around 100 or so hours.

My experience with Blue Ray has been less than stellar as well. I've found that most movies are not significantly improved by the format and even when they are the price difference (up to 50% more than an equivalent DVD) is enough to ensure that I rarely purchase a blue ray based movie.

Now that I'm about to move to a new city where I'll be living in a dorm for a time, I've actually considered selling my PS3 simply because it rarely sees use. A blue ray drive in my PC would replicate the most common functionality I get out of the system and I'd have one less device to lug across the country.

I would say.. kinda.. its getting there. So if your saving up, go ahead and save up, because the PS3 is starting to ramp up, where as the 360 is starting to gear down. (as in about 3 more years life expectency or less till there is an Xbox 3)

It is important to look at exclusive titles on this, Such as others have said, Infamous, Demons souls, Little big planet, Resistance, GoW3, Heavy rain, ect, But also look at upcoming exclusive titles as well, Such as Final Fantasy XIII: Versus.

Beyond that, do a little pro/con work over the two.

Pro:
Will likely be the gap system between the next console generation, much like the PS2 is still having titles released to it, so it will hold you over till prices on next gen consoles come out in round about 3-5 years.

Free online play.

Bluray, wifi built in (only took MS like 4 years to get on the ball of that one) Web browser, Access to PS1 library via download or original discs, Access to PS2 library dependant on modle (although they are projecting to readd the software emulator to all models down the road)

Typically, much less failure rate (although I say this having a PS3 with the Yellow light of death syndrome)

Slightly better graphics.

potential for user generated content.

Cons:

Much like the ps2, as the console gets older, more of a vast library of very bad games to wade through. Not to say MS doesnt have their share of bad games, but it seems that this is one of the few positives on how restrictive MS is on developers.

If you have large hands, the Playstation controllers are a bit counter intuitive of having the control driving analog stick in opposition to the 360 controller. (i personally think that the 360 controller is perhaps the single best controller since the Snes controller.) If your willing to take a chance on durability, and longevity, you can pick up a Dreamgear Shadow series controller that basically alleviates this.

Still over priced compared to the other 2 consoles, though Vastly more competitive now compared to the 600$ tag on release day.

Certain parts have a tendency to go out, such as fans and hard drives.

With the US economy in the shape it is now and what has been one of the principle driving forces behind the economic downturn, Outsourcing, the concept of shipping your money overseas.

I say honestly... a PS3 is definitely worth the investment, but I suggest checking out pawn shops and the like to get a more equitable value on it. Got one from a pawn shop which was the 60gb holy grail of PS3s for 135$. Sure the serial number was filed off, but posession is 9/10ths of the law yanno.

If you have the money, and can't really think of anything to spend it on, and don't want to save it for repairs to a car, then get a PS3. Vice versa with the 360. It's better to simply buy both consoles, and then laugh at all the kids crying and console warring.
