Is it worth starting to play an MMO? And if so which one?

My favorites are Trickset (a 2D South Korean game & an improvement over Maple Stroy, though MS had a way better soundtrack).

Runes of Magic (It's supposedly comparable to WoW, only it's free& has way less trolls).

I also liked Dungeons & Dragons Online; fantastic dungeons, but 50% of the content is pay-to-access after you reach a specific level, & I am broke.

All 3 are free-tp-play with buyable content. The first two, depending on which server you play, have medium-low traffic on a good day, though RoM has lots of traffic in the towns durring after school/work & weekend hours. DDO is always busy, but not so much that you're constantly bumping into other players. I'd say all of them were good for beginers & DDO has a tutorial level.

Wow just had a look a a trailer for fallen earth and looks cool. Like S.T.A.L.K.E.R online.

well I'm going to try free trials for WOW, LOTRO, fallen earth, and maybe a few of the others mentioned here.

Anything else you guys can think of?

LOTRO is pretty good, and the community it has is great.

They're going free-to-play in the fall or so, so that might be something to keep in mind.
free-to-play?? that usually means that the games free but everything else is not e.g. good items that you can only get from buying.

correct me if I'm wrong
From what I've heard, there will be an in-game shop, but it'll only be for the super-mega-uber items that take the fun out of the game because of how overpowered you are.
I'm not sure where you're hearing that because all evidence to this point doesn't show anything near that.

At this point, it's known that the LOTRO store will sell:
- convenience items (like scrolls that have monster kills count as multiples for kill based deeds)
- luxury items (like new mounts and cosmetic clothing/armour that you may or may not be able to get in the game anyway)
- basic gear (like starter sets similar to what they already give away free in lotteries.. some low level potions, a few pieces of really good jewelery if you're under level 20 but useless afterwards, etc)
- very basic buffs (like a permanent +1 to a Virtue rating, even though you can generally get the same thing in game in an hour or two and the Cash Shop version falls under the same cap as if you earned it in game)
- Quest Packs (the main landmass will be totally open to Free players but outside of the Epic quest line and Starter Zones which should get you to level 25 or so, Free Players will have to buy area based Quest Packs if they want to do something other than grind mobs for XP)
- Expansion Packs
- Optional Extra Stuff (like more storage space, character slots or Gold capacity since non subscribing players will have capped Gold otherwise, etc.)
- Premium Character Classes (which are currently included in the Mines Of Moria expansion pack though that may change once F2P goes live)

Turbine has expressly stated that Uber gear and raiding gear will not be in the shop. Also, as Points for the Cash Store can be earned in game, even if there is something in the Shop you really want you may simply be able to buy it once you accrue enough Points through normal play, no real life money required. Sure, they might be lying about all this or they might change their minds later, but that's their story right now.

I'd consider myself a MMO Vet.

I've played Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Everquest, Eve Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Pirates of the Burning Sea and Star Trek Online.

My suggestion would probably be Lord of the Rings Online. It has alot of the positive aspects that made WoW so popular, but a real familiar setting (middle earth) and a great community. The Story line is easy to follow as well and helps you learn how MMO's progress from one area to another.

I saw you were thinking Eve. That's not a bad choice either and is a completely different animal than the other MMO's out there in my opinion. The toughie for me with Eve is there is some barriers to entry as it is hard to get in and going in such an old and established game...especially with one focused so much on it's virtual economy. It's not impossible though. I wasn't a day one player and found my niche quick enough...just not as fast as some of the others.

Of course, I'm interested in how The Old Republic turns out as well. I'm definitely intrigued. I'd still say play LoTRO for now though...at least til TOR comes out. :)

I know I will take some flak for suggesting this, but it IS worth mentioning at least for a trial. Star Wars Galaxies. Of course this one is famous for it's complete overhaul atrocity called the NGE, but I played both before and after and while it was terrible immediately following the switch, they have worked out most the kinks and the play system isn't all that bad anymore. It's a little different motif and it is definitely an older game, but I still enjoy it some...though it could just be that it is my first MMO and my glasses are rose tinted.

Lately I've felt like I would like to give an MMO a go as I've never really played one before (except for a week trial of WOW which I did enjoy for about 5 days then got bored with it)

So anyway Looking at the big ones e.g. WOW,EVE,LOTRO ect.. I think that Eve looks like a fun one for me as it reminds me of a browser based MMO I played for nearly 2 years e.g the space, trading, space battles ect. But I would mind trying any of the others as well.

So I would just like to know more from players of any MMO what the games are like to play and how easy it is to get into the game not just as someone new to that MMO but also someone who has no experience in MMO's at all.

Things I'd like to know about are: gameplay, subscription fee and the community of the game. And if you would recommend it to someone new to MMO'S. Oh and if they have a trial.
Wait for either Guild Wars 2 or Star wars ToR.

Guild wars 1 and 2 don't have monthly fees, have alot of dev support, best PvP (for GW1 at least) and a big community

ToR is made by Bioware whom are excellent devs, though they don't have experience regarding MMO's I'm sure they'll do great. It'll be pay to play but the community will be huge seeing as it's Star Wars.

dont go for a MMO go play LOL or league of legends its a MULTIPLAYER FREE RPG RTS nothing like it except for dota and newerth

AND DID I MENTION ITS FREE!!!

I joke its a really good game it consumes too much time sometimes but i get a smiler mmo kick because the game is sooo in depth with strategics that would melt your brain

if your still looking for mmo wait for tera, guild wars 2, cataclysm because it will make wow start better or Old republic

Whether or not that community will be good is anyone's guess though.

Wait for The Old Republic, it's shaping up to be great and the community on the forums at least is nice enough.

Never really liked MMO's that much but I still like trying them out. LOTRO was fun if you like LOTR and the people are mostly rather friendly. WoW was rather bland, people were mean and I didn't have to much fun with it, WAR was fun if you like PVP, but there isn't to many people playing it anymore, and STO well, you have to love star trek and try something that's very very different then normal MMOs.

Right now I am torn between this and the 40K MMO coming out, both look rather awesome, but one is made by biowear.

I would definitely recommend LotRO. Best community I've come across over 11 years of MMO gaming. People are generally very helpful, the game world and story is very coherent and it will take you a LONG time to run out of stuff to do. One thing about it though is that it's as much about the journey as it is reaching maximum level.

As somebody else mentioned, Eve could be tricky unless you already have friends playing. It takes real-time to skill up in that game so even if you play hard, you'll struggle to catch up with established players.

If you're in Europe, I'd be happy to re-roll a LotRO character with you.

Otherwise, good luck. :)

Ahh I myself am an EVE player. You need patience, a LOT of it, but it is very rewarding in the long term. The community are incredibly helpful, and you are free to do whatever you like pretty much. Just give it a shot, you might not enjoy it but a lot of other people do =)

Well, if you really want to play an MMO, I suggest waiting for Cataclysm to come out for WoW since right now the game is pretty boring in the early levels. To much of the population is in their 80s so you're hardly going to find any groups until then.

Either than that wait for SW: Old Republic, which should be the next best thing, plus it'll be a new MMO by bioware, and that's a plus.

If you start one now, try out one of the free to play ones like DDO. If you're going to pay, hold off for Guild Wars 2.

WoW, if you gonna sell your soul you can at least sell it for a good price.
Well said. (highfive)

OT: Make sure you don't any excessive work or stuff to do when you get into it, WoW will slowly degenerate all of your brain's contents that isn't labeled "Blizzard"

Brace yourself for some heavy opinion but this is my experience from these games.

From what i saw EVE managed to successfully capture the boring parts of the future. I didn't play past the trial on this game but it didn't seem as action-packed as i'd hoped, and i just spend a few days farming and being bewildered.

Post-experiencing the trial all I've heard about it people joining corporations (a virtual job) that everyone takes too seriously and you get beat around the head for not meeting a farming quota.

Maybe i'm just hearing the vocal minority though, you could always give the trial a go.

As for WoW the game seems to be on it's way steadily downhill. It used to be brilliant but from what i've seen recently, Blizzard are fucking the game over for the sake of making new players buy the expansions quicker and the community isn't all what it used to be.
Cataclysm is being released soon though so it could be all-change. It's worth checking out the trial for that once you can.

Oh and i wouldn't recommend WoW if you get addicted to games easily, you don't want to end up as one of those angry warcraft kids on youtube!

If you want a whole lot of freedom in the long run in a dark and vast universe, then Eve Online should be considered.
It's complex and incredibly deep.

But beware:

Short: I love it. :)

Since then Eve had several additional expansions.
In contrary to other MMORPGs you don't have to pay for every single expansion. Let's say it's included in the monthly fees (15-11$, depends on the abo/payment options).

Edit: if you like I'll post some selfmade screenshots.
Some of the graphics and ships are simply awesome.

Heroes of Newerth.

It's like DOTA, except it has leaver protected games, easily accsessable friends list, good communication capabilities and you have the capability to check your opponents so you don't end up playing against someone with a 10.0 KDR (like someone has that though). Patching occures every other week (or close to), and it only costs 30$ (one time fee). I think it's really fun once you get the hang of it, especially if you're playing with some mates. Take note that I've never played DOTA before, and still enjoy HoN. :)
