The use of "is it music?" is vague. Yes it is music. Is the person performing it a musician? Only if said person also wrote the music, if no one in said band wrote the music they perform, than really they are more of an instrument than a musician in my opinion.

The problem.

Good music = Genius lyric writer + (musicians x unattractiveness) - (50 x demanding lover)

Not all the time, but most of the time. Pink Floyd were some ugly bastards. Backstreet Boys weren't.

Music is like a rollercoater ride for me. I love the classical music & operas of the 1800s, then the many varieties of Jazz & "oldies" from the 1920s-40s, then for the next two decades, I can only tollerate 1 genre of music from each; rock (50s) & twist (60s), then I find I can't stand any music from the 70s while I can't find any songs I dislike from the 80s, then a lot of new genres of music coming out & they're all nice...until about 1994, where they become progressively worse each year. By 1996, I decide to get off "the ride" (music from any English-speaking country). I'm now exploring the rest of the park & I still don't like the sounds I inevitably hear wafting over from the "English Rollercoaster," which are even worse than what I got off to.

Then, after some looking, I found Electric Wizard. They sound just like they're from the 70's, but they're so much heavier. It's perfect, they're just what I was looking for, and they're now my favourite band of all time.

So what I'm saying is, great music is still being made, you just have to look.
Not sure if I sadi this to you already but I think you'd enjoy Cathedral.

For me to consider something music it must be able to be performed live with people playing all of the instruments, and the singer must be able to sing without technical assistance. As a general guideline, there must be drums or some percussion instruments to keep beat, and at least one string instrument.
Stop right there, pilgrim.
You don't consider string quartets as music, per your definition.
Might want to rethink your rule.

People say alot of bad stuff about Gaga, but the woman is clearly ridiculously talented.

Just because she presents her songs as pop... if she went all Tori Amos and did the solo piano thing full time they'd call her a genius.

To be honest I can't fucking stand classic rock. It's all the same power chords and shitty squealing solos. Not to mention classic rock is over. I listen to indie, cause

a) It's varied
b) It's good

and

c) It's still around.

Back when I went through my shitty classic rock phase (lololol slash is so talented lol) I listened to every well known classic rock band of all time. It's over for me, I can't listen to it anymore. There will never be another classic rock album (or at least a GOOD one). Whereas with Indie music, it's always being released, and it's (in my opinion) much better than classic rock. Evidently, though, you haven't listened to the right Indie. Check out the Rural Alberta Advantage, Neutral Milk Hotel, Attack in Black, and Audio/Rocketry.

Yeah, pop music has declined since its glory days through the sixties and early seventies, but there will always be good new music if you have any sense to look past the top 40 chart toppers.

Also, the way you dismiss music you don't like as "shit" disgusts me.

These guys are on an independent label and are therefore shit. Enjoy.

There are many things I want to reply to in this thread. For example, the guy who listed "Rappers, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Justin Beeber" all in the same category. Wow man, way to flippantly dismiss an entire genre of music while clearly having very little knowledge of it.

When it comes down to it though, this (the original post) is an argument I see a lot on Youtube when watching a Who video or the like: someone invariably posts something to the effect of "I'm 15 years old and I listen to good music like this and everyone else my age listens to crap music look at me I'm so enlightened and mature blah blah." Now, this is not quite what you're saying, but the sentiment is the same. Even people who are disagreeing with you are making one certain point that really irks me.

Basically, Ke$ha. Let's talk about Ke$ha. We could insert plenty of other names there, because what we're really talking about is the latest pop sensation that immediately becomes the punching bag for everyone who listens to "real music" and hates all this "pop garbage" and rawr rawr get off my lawn you little rapscallions etc etc. This is something that bothers the hell out of me. You assume that, because she's popular and commerically successful and the kids like her that she must be garbage (and natrually must barely have any creative control over her music and is probably some vapid idiot just coasting on being mildly attractive and having good producers).

Frankly, I think that's a really ignorant view. Because honestly: you don't really know. Just because she is not making the music that you like you assume the music she is making is shit. The question I have to ask everyone holding that opinion is: have you ever tried dancing? Instead of sitting down listening to your music and snobbishly calling down from on high what is good and what isn't, have you tried actually getting off your ass and moving around to the music? Dancing to it at a party? A club? No, because only those damned kids go to parties and clubs and ew there will probably be girls there and they're all sluts and probably on ecstasy anyway and etc etc. Not all music is about the lyrics or the awesome guitar riffs or the musicality. Bach had some wicked musicality but when I want to drink and get rowdy I throw on some Dropkick Murphys. Sometimes, music is about the mood and the energy, how it makes you feel and how it makes you move. Different kinds of music for different kinds of events.

tl;dr: Just because someone is making music that you don't like doesn't mean that music is terrible. Maybe you're forgetting to actually enjoy yourself.

I could go on and on about this subject, but I'll just say three things: fuck auto-tuners, for they take away the necessity of being able to sing to be a singer; fuck hip-hop and pop people who use prerecorded instrumentals instead of paying a real musician to play the parts, because this makes it even harder for real musicians to find side work in this economy; and fuck "just todays' hits" radio stations that only play 20 different songs at any one time and don't get new songs for a month at a time, because the only thing they do is create a niche market for same-y one hit wonders.

I don't care about their pathetic attempts at meaningful lyrics. I don't care that they're popular. I don't care that it sells. Their melodies come from a computer instead of their inspirations, their lyrics from a producer instead of their souls. I like the pop sound, but it's all the same.

So to answer the original question? No. It's not music anymore: it's cookie cutter tripe.

Also, yes, thank you for posting that (the Lady Gaga Pokerface video, sorry, I fail at quoting things). I always bring this up when someone starts ripping on pop music today and Lady Gaga invariably pops up. Just because someone isn't always making music that showcases their full vocal/instrumental/musical talent does not mean they don't HAVE talent.

Also, I'm sorry for the long rant I posted, I get sort of fired up when people start calling down insults on people they know nothing about.

Music, Like all art, is subjective. You can't do music right or wrong. So yes modern music is still music and it is still art in it's own way.

Music is a funny thing, it can really make people like you or hate you. I tried showing my friend one of my all time favorite songs and he's like "Lolwhut is that pussy shit? I thought you were my friend and now your trying to show me this horrible music? Metal or die fagget." and thus I barely talk to him about music because it causes him to go into douche mode.

Now see. I can dig that. That actually shows that she has some talent.

Can I marry you mate =) For all those who know me (i.e been on the escapist for more then say a month or two), you know that I love Classic rock. Hell, it's the only music I listen do these days, barr a few modern bands like 10 Years, Jimmy Eat World, Metallica (from their "classic rock" albums, to their modern day albums).

So because your preferred style of music is scarce nowadays, you wonder if music itself has gone?
Riiight...

Think of it this way: each generation believes that the music that defined them or that they grew up with was the best and that most music that comes afterward is mere noise.

Yes, actually. I bet the one I'm thinking of isn't the same one, but it's on the Pokemon 2000 soundtrack. Ridiculous.

Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk

OT: Music is music like art is art. It's completely subjective. Personally, I loathe metal (I'm sooo getting ostracized for that comment) and screamo, and most rap. I don't consider them music. Doesn't mean they're not, just means that my subjective opinion is that they aren't. It's all in what you like.

Personally, I'm a punk/indie/alternative chick, who has a fairly eclectic library. And my favorite thing to listen to right now is Sugarcult. I'm not saying they're an amazing band, just that I happen to enjoy the way they put their music together and I really like their lyrics (to me, that's generally where my love for an artist starts: can they make a song that's both catchy enough to sing along to and deep enough to make me think/take my mind off other things?). I also have a ton of older punk (New York Dolls, anyone?), random stuff I pick up (The Contes, Sage Francis, Yoko Kanno), and a lot of nerdcore.

I like a lot of 'mainstream' bands too. Green Day, for one. Although I believe that Hot Topic is a really shitty way to get your music.

MC Lars sums it up nicely:

"Hot Topic uses contrived identification with youth sub-cultures to manufacture an anti-authoritarian identity and make millions. That $8 you paid for the Mudvayne poster would be better spent used for seeing your brother's friend's band. DIY ethics are punk rock! Starting your own label is punk rock! GG Allin was punk rock! But when a crass corporate vulture feeds on mass consumer culture, then spending Mommy's money is not punk rock!"

There is no such thing as "good" music. Sure i enjoy my blues and rock but can't stand these modern electronic bands but someone might feel the other way around. Whatever takes you to "that place" is cool.

Edit: this is in my opinion murder but the crowd seems to like it:
