The amount of self entitled people here that seem to think having to abide by some simple necessary rules is ridiculous.People in Libya and other places around the world are dying to earn their freedom and because you have it you moan and complain about oppression and breaching your privacy when you can't go on Facebook.You make me sick.

Actually, it's exactly like that.

You bought (and subsequently own) your PS3/laptop. However, in order to use the free service they provide (PSN/internet), you have to follow their rules or else you can't use it.

OT: My school had something like that. My teacher loved screwing with us. (Taking control of our mouse, making images/words pop up on the screen, etc.)

they can still see your profile, because its a 'not now' button. there are people i dont like who added me and they can see my posts.

I believe you can tweak your privacy settings through the account menu to change that.

Ok, since many people have said yes, I have a follow up question. If someone is caught on Facebook etc, are they (the school) allowed to browse through the person's profile for information through said person's log in?

Or even better don't accept or reject. Then just claim you forgot the password or haven't gotten around to it.

Seems your first question is done and answered, so I'll answer the second- fuck no. The computer and what you do on it while in school is their business, but your profiles on anything that isn't directly connected with that school is yours.

Well I think the school could get into trouble if someone used their Internet connection to do something illegal so I can see why they implemented this, but surely simply blocking such sites (as my school did) would be more effective.

When you say 'interact with them' can the teachers actually take control of the computer and shut it down, or just tell the student that they've been caught?

Simple reason why they cant block the site: because there are hundreds of backdoor sites that kids can use to log on Facebook, games-sites etc.

Most of these backdoors though are harmful and record the activity of the person using it which if you can imagine with kids and facebook is a Safeguarding issue.

Since you are using their internet yes. If you were to take your laptop and not use the internet connection they provide you could have an argument that they can't but theres no guarantee that would win either.

If they are simply monitoring their connection via their own equipment then there's not alot that can be done. If this "Registering" your laptop has them placing software on your computer, thats HIGHLY illegal if your country has privacy laws.

you must be in high school. So yes. as an American, you have NO RIGHTS until you are 18, and even then, a high school is allowed to deny you those rights. A college is allowed to do that as well, but probably wouldn't.

in my area, they just blocked over 99% of websites as a precaution (this is in Scotland btw) so unless you had some decent computing skills (which i didn't at the time) you just had to make do

I doubt it's highly illegal if you VOLUNTEER to have said software placed on your laptop.

Yes. They can't force you to install anything on your laptop, but they are allowed to make you register with them. Same deal as if you want to get a library card or something - they can't force you to read ONLY books from their library, but they can require you to sign up to get the service.
