I couldn't even get past the first episode.

"Ninja powers" what the fuck? You're wearing bright orange.

It's a show made for 12 year olds.

I sort of grew out of it myself. From when I was 12-13, Naruto was the biggest thing to me. I won't say it's bad, as I can think back to earlier arcs in the story with positive feelings. Yet, after a while, it got convoluted, crazy, and as far as the show is concerned, bloated with fillers. I may not like it anymore, but I won't say I hate it in any way.

Don't forget, it's also popular/was popular, and what happens to the popular stuff? It gets hated on the most.

I'd say the two main reasons is a lot of people outgrew it. A lot of people who liked it when they were 12 outgrew it or the second reason is the obsessive fans. I liked it until I started meeting other Naruto fans. I'll just be casually chatting to someone about anime and bring up Naruto and I had one girl go on a giant NarutoxSasuke rant, including showing be pictures of yaoi on her phone. The more people I talked to who were just plain creepy like that made me want to associate less with the series.
Oh you poor thing, no one should have to be put through that. I once told a guy that I watched Naruto when I was younger and thought it was pretty cool and he went on a rant about how much of a ***** Sakura is and how awesome Hinata is. While I happen to agree, I think that the workplace is not the kind of place to be ranting about that crap. Then the next time I saw him, he came to work with a pussy deflector and started saying "kage bunshin no jutsu" and other jutsu names and making the hand signs. Oh and he mispronounced all of them.

Needless to say, there was not a woman in that workplace that would speak to me for months after that episode... they all thought that I was a creep like him after he attached himself to me like that. I should also add that the guy was 20 something and I was 18 at the time so this was like 6 years ago.

I have no problem with people liking the show. I still remember it fondly and I still play all the Ultimate Ninja Storm games because they're cool and the story modes cut out all the fluff and you can see the main parts of the story but it's when grown adults obsess over a children's cartoon to the point of publicly humiliating themselves and others is when people get annoyed.

I just saw a lot of words that don't make sense, bizarre titles for things, Japanese names and the word "anime". And there's an "anime scene"?

I genuinely cannot conceive of a single context in which this sentence makes any sense.

Hey everyone, I've just recently started making a comeback in the anime scene, after enjoying Persona 4 and Sword Art Online. I started watching Glass Reflection reviews on Youtube and I noticed frequent jabs at the Naruto franchise and I remembered seeing mean-spirited comments aimed at the show on forums before.

I used to watch it when I was like twelve or something, along with Bleach and Samurai Shampoo and thought it was pretty cool. I even picked up that Full Burst game and it's very good.

So my question is: "is the show hated or something and for what reasons?"
I hate it because it's badly written, badly animated, poorly directed, and it just wont fucking die, same with bleach.
It's got a nice soundtrack but that's as far as the goodness of it goes.
It's just a bad bad bad shonen.

True as that may be, we're seeing more and more forms of entertainment that are made "for kids" become favorites of adults. Could it be something more fundamental?
Well, personally, I found the main character somewhat obnoxious. More than that, though, I think a lot of people find it rather shallow. There's not a great deal of depth or thought to it. It's just your average shonen adventure story. It's the same reason some people hate DBZ. Once you've seen one shonen story you've seen them all. Bleach, YuYu Hakusho, and Soul Eater really aren't all that different from one another. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy them, of course. I watch stuff from my childhood all the time, even if I objectively realize its not great story telling. Don't let people tell you what to enjoy.

That said, there's much better out there, and I think a lot of people feel the better stuff gets overshadowed by shows like Bleach and Naruto. Berserk has one of the best plots I've ever seen, out of any fictional medium, but the average person walking down the street hasn't ever heard of it. Unfortunately, some people become rather prudish about the whole thing as a result.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say that most people either find the main character annoying, or else they feel that their "above" it.

I would recommend that you try some of the more complex anime programs. Berserk, as mentioned, has a great anime and a better Manga. Neon Genesis needs no introduction, but it's great if you haven't seen it. Elfen Lied had its issues, and its absolutely brutal, but I did find it legitimately thought provoking. Serial Experiments Lain was unique. Enjoy Shonen, there's nothing wrong with that, but I do think you should branch out. There's a lot more anime has to offer if you

I grew up on anime with rampant nudity & gory bodily explosions. I just can't take the carefree nature & simplistic style of Naruto seriously. I've also had it up to here with moe.

I'm an oldschool anime veteran from back in the days when nobody watched anime, & Naruto brought in a lot of new fans who won't watch classics. For me, the series is representational of both the end of anime as an exclusionary little-known ultra geek interest, & just something that shows off how anime has not changed for the better since the 90s ended.

Lastly, most Naruto fans seem to be raging Weeabos; an embarrassing phase I went through myself. I know.....that sounds really shallow, bitter, & elitist.

You were 12. Naruto should be cool to you. I was the same. Now that I'm older, I prefer more adult oriented fare.

Also it's over stayed it's welcome. Like a sitcom, animes typically have a shelf life of 2 seasons. Some can stick around longer, but most wear out their welcome and characters by then.

Oh, my bad. "Pussy Deflector" is the name my friends and I use to call the forehead protectors that they wear in the show when people are wearing them in public in real life. It's kind of a joke used on some parts of the internet and sometimes I forget where I am while I'm typing.

And "kage bunshin no jutsu" is the Japanese word for "Ninja Art of the Shadow Clone" I suppose would be the best translation I could think of off hand.

I used to like Cowboy Bebop, but when CN played it's mere 13 episodes over & over again for years on end, it too overstayed it's welcome. There were fans that would piss blood if CN took one of their Toonami shows off, insisting they were the best animes ever. There are thousands of better animes, better dubbed or well-subbed, but they couldn't be assed to leave their seats or even learn to read, with the idea set in their heads that if it was on cable TV in english, it had to be the best Japan had to offer.

I will never ever understand how Hagaren (FMA) & Naruto are more popular than Slayers or classic Hunter x Hunter, or why anyone liked Evangelion.

Hate is such a strong word. Let?s say I just think it is garbage.
That?s really all. But that is not special for Naruto but the shonen ?genre? at large.
Tons of filler material, basically every episode pans out in the same way and the good guys win at the end no matter what. Seen one, seen all.
Yea I don?t like it.

My theory is anime (I don't read manga...) over 30 episodes has a high chance of losing its point. Unless it has no real point (School Rumble). Its why I hate Bleach and Naruto. Dragonball Z and Inuyasha are other sufferers of this, though I like them to a point.

Oh Naruto. I used to watch the anime, and now I have actually been reading the manga, simply for lack of better things to do, since I keep up with One Piece every week anyway. And yes, both are pretty bad. The anime has lots of filler, and like so much anime even when it isn't filler it is filled with needless dialogue, whining, angst, drama, and so forth. The manga, at this point in time, has all of that times about a thousand, with it practically being friendship speech after friendship speech, so that I don't actually get any enjoyment out of reading it, it's just something that I do... for some reason I can't explain even to myself.

So is Naruto hated? By some people, certainly. It's still pretty damn popular despite that though. And is the hate deserved? To a certain extent, yes. But ultimately that's something you have to decide for yourself. If your question is whether Naruto is great and worthy of getting into, I would say the answer is no. You can find better uses for your time, even within the shonen genre.

Most of the other posts have outlined the most common resons. My personal reason for lossing interest is it is looking less and less likly that Sasuke will be beaten to death with a heavy, blunt object due to the mind boggling amount of fans he has, the guy is king of douche mountain for gods sake!

Plus Naruto went from being quite weak compared to both his friends and enemies to Superman on Gods own personal stash of super steroids level of power without any middle ground. there should have been a more gradual increase in his power.

I've seen most of it, but dropped it because I couldn't be asked to watch on a weekly basis (when it finishes, I'll probably pick it up where I left off).

I liked it. It wasn't amazing, but it was neat. It had a lot of things going for it, and it had a lot of problems; both of which are things that seem to be unique to franchise Shounen.

Probably the best thing I liked about it was the fact that the Protagonists depressing back story (because all shounen protagonists must have depressing back stories :p) was something other than his family was murdered/died in an accident/sickness/etc,etc,etc (i.e., its something other than death). Specifically, Naruto's complete scape-goating by the rest of Konoha.

Well, that was how it was originally presented, but then we find out in Part 2 that that in of itself is because his parents were killed. Because it would be too much to ask a shounen not to have the parents die at some point.

They're a bit like Disney in that regard, aren't they?

It has always had its fair share of detractors. Many point to the fact that he's supposed to be a ninja, yet he wears bright orange and is super loud. Others say it drags on and on and on and on and on...and on. The filler episodes for this series are legendary. Two years of nothing but filler in the anime. Still others feel they aren't ninjas at all, but instead wizards because of all their powers. Finally, there are others who just don't like the fact that the main star is a twelve year old kid, along with other twelve year old kids--fourteen now in Shippuden--and all the drama and child angst that comes with that.
And Sasuke. Man, I cannot STAND Sasuke.

I, for one, still read the manga ever week it comes out. I've stuff with the series for too long to just drop it now. And I still buy the DVD box sets when they're released. However, I have to admit that I'm really hoping that the series is coming to an end. When the war started, I was super excited because I thought, 'Finally, we'll get to see OTHER characters doing stuff besides Naruto.' The anime had a chance to go freaking wild with the war fillers. But no. It turns into the same old thing of, "Only Naruto can do anything," and, once again, he doesn't even KILL the bad guy. He gives the same stupid speech he gave all the way back at Zabuza about how he feels this way and will never give up, the bad guy has a change of heart after Naruto beats him, and we're done. This is getting really annoying, because it's how he's defeated literally every one of his foes except Kakazu.
And I have to say, the Kakazu fight was my favorite because there WAS no clashing of ideas and views on life. It was straight up kill or be killed, with no stopping in the middle to yell at the other person about how they're wrong.

So that's my reason for getting annoyed with Naruto. It has fallen into a rut so bad that I really hope the war is the end of it. And if it's not, good Lord, let some other characters do stuff just so we can have something different.

::Headsmack:: Oh, I know one big reason Naruto specifically is unpopular. The fans themselves, especially when it came to conventions & DeviantArt! & it's given people the impression that Naruto fans are utterly annoying, making people hate the show whether they've seen it or not. You could say that Friendship is Magic, Avatar, Pixar/Disney & Twilightfans are guilty of the exact same things.

1)An oversaturation of people at conventions dressing as characters from only 1 show, ruining cosplay for everyone else.

2)They pulled the same shot as Twitards at Comic Con; taking up early seats in large numbers for a show that wouldn't be on for hours. Say there was a show on right before their Naruto thing; the Naruto fans have taken up all the seats for that show, leaving the true audience locked out in the halls. then they will make the person running that show feel unwanted, like an opening band at a concert. They might decided not to come back next year. It happened.

3)The year before I quit DA, I remember almost every daily Deviation being crudely drawn Naruto, Sonic, or FMA fanart, often shipping wish fullfillment & OCs, making it even more annoying. This was a shared common complaint many people posted in their journals.

4)Aggressive mob mentality; Shoving it down your throats, talking about nothing else, being mouth-foamingly death-threat-issuing defensive over any criticism.

You gave the answer to your question yourself. The reason it's hated is because you were watching it when you were twelve, and it is still running today.

Its a little drawn out and has a large amount of filler, the first huge section of it is about 100 episodes long or something as the writers aged everyone several years to reflect a change in the target audience and the needed 100 episodes worth of filler to come up with new story arcs as a result and I think that turned a lot of people off. When I talk to people who didn't like it was mostly because this filler chunk in the middle and few actually saw the other side, that being said its probably hated for a myriad of other legitimate reasons like its a show about ninjas and yet no one does anything even remotely close to being sneaky , the main character is a "ninja" wearing a bright orange suit, that's not exactly inconspicuous.
