Is Night Vision useful in any game?

Girlfriend's brother walked in on us playing ODST, had a go and asked 'why the hell is there a button to blind yourself?'.
It was a daylight level.
Take from that what you will. I just think it's a nice story.

I don't mean thermal vision, where every enemy glows in an easy-to-spot aura, I mean that strange filter that turns everything on a dark level from a shade of blue to a shade of green.

I've never encountered a game where this mode makes anything easier to see, and was wondering if there were any out there.
Play STALKER, then tell me night vision doesn't help.

I never use the Night-vision Goggles in the MW series because they are basically useless unless you have your television brightness on very low. I can't remember a game where I actually needed to use Night-vision to see besides one of the Splinter Cell games on PS2.

I use Night-Eye in Oblivion as a Khajit...

Once I modded it to make it a toggle rather than a duration-spell.

This is true in a game. In real life, no augmented vision currently realized would help in this situation. IR can't see through hot things (white phosphorous smoke for example) and image intensification just amplified ambient light. Since the light reflected from the person doesn't pass though a thick enough steam cloud, night vision wouldn't help here either.

Some of the most useful night vision I remember was from Syphon Filter 2.
Holy crap, someone else who played those games. And I agree. The nightvision rifle was insanely useful, as was the H11 with nightvision scope.
Of course I played them man. The Syphon Filter games were some of the best action shooters on the old PS1....*nostalgia*.

Hmm....the H11, wasn't that the gun that was like a fully automatic sniper rifle or something?

TES IV Oblivion...makes everything SO MUCH easier. Trust me, it's 1000x better than a torch, plus it frees up a hand
Seconded.

Being able to actually see anything but darkness kinda helps when you're sneaking about some bloke's house trying to steal everything he owns while he's peacefully sleeping five feet away is rather helpful (and yes, that's what I spent the entire game doing)

I can remember it being rally useful at night on Crysis online, and later Crysis Wars, when playing on servers with day-night-cycle. It enabled you to completely destroy those who didn't have it. It was the only option for moving covertly while still seeing well. Those who used flashlights or laser sights didn't live long...

I just got done playing Dark Forces, and they had NV in there too. I found it quite useful in several areas, and this was a 15 year old game. I'd like to know what games Samonix has been playing to find it useless.

Yes, in Hitman: Silent Assassin.
If you don't use nightvision in some places, you'd be playing with a pitch black screen.

Just turn your brightness up
That's kind of cheating. It's really cheap.

If I'm sneaking down a shadowy path, being really invisible, I'll be pissed to be seen by some guy with a high brightness setting.

Night vision can be useful, but it sometimes makes it harder for me to see anything.
So higher brightness is cheating but checkpoints isn't?

How would you feel if you where a soldier who had to fend for your life, but every time you killed a guy you would go back in time again and again until you where killed.

OT: I like it. Makes me feel like a ninja.

I still have the first 3 games somewhere. And yes, that would be the one.
