Is PE an important class?

PE is ok, for me it was boring, but generally a bludge. except once when i had this ***** of a substitute who, because i had forgotten my sports shoes, forced me to play softball on a synthetic field in the middle of an Australian February in bare feet - no socks no school shoes (which i did have) - just bare bloody feet. I got blisters all over my feet from the heat... fucking *****.

I think it should focus more on training people on how to keep fit and exercise safely. For example, teaching people how to do weight training properly and not to just do bench presses with oversized weights to look good.

As the nerd of the class PE was shit. My coordenation for soccer or handball was awful, I thou enjoyed volleyball and basketball. And still regardless people making fun if you dont have the skills for the activity in place, PE is silly, forces you to do activities you actually don't like. Or you dont like to do in school. I had colleagues in the juveniles and juniors of football, basketball and handball, and still they hated PE, specially when the activity was their sport as playing with a bunch of demotivated and descoordenated folks for them was like torture.
Even if they say its useful to stimulate you to undertake a sport carrier, how can it be?! Maybe it works with American Football?! Cinema and television give that idea. Could work with golf too. Doesn't work with soccer, swimming, cycling.
And definitely not with gymnastics (including rhythmic, artistic or the jumps to water variation, ski jumping, and even skate and snowboard jumps.) At 15 you cant start, at 15 you need to be a pro already, and in the hardest of the specialities, artistic gymnastic, your best shot for a gold medal is at 15-18. At 20 you lost flexibility and your performance quality starts to fall abruptly.

I agree that PE is all well and good for those who are fit, they don't see it as a problem and feel it is necessary. I've always been very sport orientated, didn't take PE as an option because it meant I had to do gymnastics. I had an accident which lead to a trapped nerve in my neck from a headstand so didn't want to do that again! PE does lead to some people having social anxiety. I do believe PE is necessary but should be structured better, like having sets instead of having everyone in the same class as it was in my school.

I'm not even going to bother with this. It's so incredibly strange and the attitude you have is exactly the attitude that created the world we live in where children are made to conform and to be just like everyone else, or they get harassed. And I hate that. No, I despise that.

It's not too much to ask that people should be allowed to be themselves and to be encouraged to learn and grow and to make the world a better place is it? Apparently it is too much to ask for. I think you're being really arrogant here. You come across as if you're deriding all sports as pointless and all atheletes as braindead morons who contribute nothing to society. Sure most sportsmen don't invent a brilliant new device which which further mankind's advancement but not all people are that gifted and intelligent. Most people who spend their whole education learning and getting smarter while completely ignoring other aspects of school life, like sport, generally don't come up with a new genius invention either.

Also, lots of atheletes support charities and outreach programmes to children in troubled areas, providing them relief through sport. Is that a bad thing? Doesn't that help make the world a better place?

Until they stopped when I went into 6th form this year, I loved the compulsary PE lessons in my school. For a start, it was basically 3 hours a week where instead of being in lessons, I could do sport and mess around with my friends. Maybe it's a rare occurance, but in my school everyone in the same PE class was fairly friendly with each other and whatever games we had going on were hilariously fun. Sure there were people picked on occaisionally, but it happened to everyone at some point. Even though I was (and probably still am) one of the more physically active and more skilled guys in my class, I still got laughed at every now and again; especially since when the class were being taught stuff I'd be the one called to do the demonstration for a sport I'd played at a high(ish) level for a few years then forgotten about. I'd always make some kind of mistake before I got back into the 'flow' (I now want to kill myself for saying that) of the sport and I was always called out on it. Maybe thats because people know I can take that stuff and laugh along with it.

That said, the kids who were fat and unfit eventually decided they'd rather sit around and do nothing, but that wasn't because of us making them feel bad, it's because they just couldn't be bothered to try. Our PE classes were never hyper-competitive and as such, the guys who actually did sport outside of school (me with football, tennis and badminton for example) never really tried to make the others look bad. Hell, if we were playing football, despite being a striker I'd throw myself in defense sometimes and spend the entire game winning the ball back and immediately giving it up to whoever was in the best position. All in all I'd say it helped introduce people to new sports which some found they were actually quite good at; thhe generally quite geeky guy in my class turned out to be a decent Goalkeeper and really quite good at tennis. He's playing tennis in a regional league now I think.

I don't quite know where I'm going with this, and I have an AS Maths exam this afternoon that I should be studying for so basically:

Which state is this? In Queensland the outdoor recreational part happens until grade 10.

at my high school, gym was about walking around either the school's indoor or outdoor track for forty minutes. so, when i gave it up junior and senior years to take AP classes instead, i feel i didn't miss much. i was a cheerleader and judo instructor, though, so i stayed in shape without it.

this has nothing to do with gym class-sounds to me like you stayed in shape whether you had a gym period or not, and that's what kept you healthy. most fat kids will stay that way whether they move around a little or not; it's a lifestyle choice.

There were 2 classes that I absolutely loved through my entire session at school. Those were A. Social Studies and B. PE. My dad had a degree in military history, and since I was completely surrounded in books talking about war from Summerian times to the War on Terror I was very knowledgeable on the subject of history. Also, since my family is military, we put a lot of emphasis on physical fitness. For all of my school days I was of healthy weight for my age, but always kept below 10% body fat. I always played a sport, but not so much it dominated my life. I was disciplined enough to keep my body in top shape at all times. I avoided junk food, I went out for morning exercises, there's a pull up bar in my room. But these days, I'm a bit concerned about the fact that PE isn't considered a serious class. It's usually pushed aside for academics, which I understand, but completely cutting it seems a bit harsh. A lot of kids don't have much of a chance to exercise, and cutting it out removes all incentive. What do you think? Is PE an important class?

The only reason that class even exists is because of fat kids :/ no other explanation unless you take P.E theory where you learn about the human body and stuff. As much as I did like my P.E lessons, I did feel closer to my exams, their was no reason for them expect for actual physical fitness, but surely revising is more important ?

That said, living in england, I hate when I see a kid that is not at least above average at playing football, or any other sport for that matter, it's stupid not to be good at sport :/

where and when did you go to school? last i knew the outdoor/sports and crap made up 80% of the class, all it was was the "jocks" picking on the rest of us under the pretense of a sport/game

NSW, And im talking about year 11 and 12

Someone may have already responded to this so my mistake if that's the case.
In NSW there are two different PE classes for choice in your final years, one is ~80% theory, the other is basically 100% practical. I know this as I am in year 12 in NSW and many of us chose to do one or both of the PE classes, however all but 3 of us dropped the practical PE at the end of year 11.
Also the contents of these practical lessons weren't just sporting games but also more basic training activies like swimming, cross country and gym.

However I'm from a rural area and so we probably have the advantage of better sporting locations and more fit students than Sydney for example.

The hell is PE important! Honestly, I hated it. I was terrible at exercise, and got all that I needed walking two and from school (a total of an hour every day, compared with the 3 hours of PE every 2 weeks). Me and my mates spent our time seeing how far we could push the coach, which led to them pretty much giving up on us.

We also did outdoor sports in the winter, indoor in the summer. Where's the sense in that?

You're missing the point. I'm not claiming sport is useless. If it wasn't for sport I wouldn't be employed.

Depends. At My First high school, the Entire school did PE first thing in the morning. It helped wake everyone up, and get the Blood flowing. It was also Fairly Lax as long as you were Moving around.
At my second school they Made me play sports (Or tried to anyways) half way through the day. It sucked and didn't help any.
So I'm gana go with No. Its not important. Because It inset being Used right.

i can see the physical (not that the teachers do anything, mostly mine sat a mile away with a paper) but i cant see how it's educational. in later years isnt it just an easier version of biology.

funny thing in the common room the school put up a board with everyones pic on it with the subjects they studied. for me they replaced business with PE.

Dodgeball? Couldn't last more than two or three sprints until I'd be completely out of breath and just give in, take the ball to the ass like a man and wander over to the seats, rinse and repeat.

Hand eye coordination sucked as well as strafing ability so Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, ect were all exercises in futility.

Trampoline... I could do a seat jump. If I fucked up something like a backward roll or something I'd kill my neck, my weight plus the momentum of a trampoline hurts like hell if you screw up.

Urg, Gymnastics? Shoulder stands are a struggle, never done a cartwheel in my life.

Football? (That's soccer you to Americans) Hated it. Didn't play it outside of school and had absolutely no interest in the petty sectarian biases between the teams and their supporters and therefore sucked at it, getting put as keeper because no one else wanted to be keeper and then getting shouted at by thick bastards who thought I sucked at it. You don't want me doing it, do it your goddamn self! No, because goal keeping's boring! Then shut the fuck up!

Fitness: Aha, something I liked! Ten mins on the running machine then the rest of the hour on weights. Actually enjoyed it since it was slow, relied on stamina and actually worked on something I cared about - ability to move big things and run for longer. The teacher would occasionally let me and another large chap go into the fitness suite, rather than be bored stiff and barely working on another activity since he knew we actually enjoyed the suite.


I'm not even all that fat, just bulky with extremely poor cardio and no interest in almost ANY sport.

Was forced to do it all through Primary and then had to pick it for the first four years of High School. Fifth year, despite having the hardest and most stressful demands of my life is the richer for letting me avoid that worthless, worthless subject.

I don't do any PE classes in college because it's not relevant to my interests what I want to do when I leave college. That and I go to a stuck-up school so 'PE' involves being good enough already to join a sports team. :<

You have to be good at sports just to get into a PE class? Mmkay. That's a new one.

We have an entire sports curriculum, and all the classes are focused on a certain sport and only open to those in the sport teams. And then there's Outdoor Rec, I suppose.

I hated PE, it made me not want to be active and keep fit. All we ever did was play football and I was always put in the net so I didn't really do anything. I enjoyed playing sports like baseball and rugby but we played those maybe once a year, in my last year never even though a load of us kept asking to because the teachers liked football.

What eventually got me more active was looking at my reflection on a bus during collage, since then I started getting off the bus a few stops earlier and walking the rest of the way. I went from about 20 stone to 16 in about half a year just doing that.

So no PE not good.

P.E was always a waste of time when I was in school. Sure, I enjoyed the odd game of rugby but the majority of PE was playing football every week and learning nothing at all. In fact, only by not bringing your kit did you ever learn anything. This was due to the teachers making us copy out of PE textbooks that would otherwise never have been touched. For all I know, it may have been different when GCSE came along, but I didn't choose it as a subject and I'm pretty apathetic to that fact.
